Animal Diversity

Different types of animals:


- Mammal
- Fish
- Bird
- Insect
- Amphibians
- Reptiles

Characteristics of Mammals:
- Mammals have hair/fur covering its body
- Mammals mainly give birth to live young
- Mammals suckle its young
- Most mammals reproduce by giving birth to young alive
- Mammals are warm blooded

Characteristics of Birds:
- Birds have feather covering its body
- Birds have a beak
- Birds have 2 wings
- All birds reproduce by laying eggs and their eggs are protected by hard shells
- Birds are warm blooded

Characteristics of Insects:
- Insects have an exoskeleton
- Insects have a 3-part body consisting of head, thorax and abdomen
- Insects have 6 legs
- Insects reproduce by laying eggs
- Insects are cold blooded

Characteristics of Fish:
- Fish has scales covering its body
- Fish breathes in water using gills
- Fish swims using its fins and tail
- Most fish reproduce by laying eggs (without hard shells)
- Fish are cold blooded

Characteristics of Amphibians:
- Amphibians have moist skin as their body covering
- Amphibians breathe through their lungs on land and moist skin in the water.
- Amphibians reproduce by laying eggs without shells in the water.
- The young of amphibians breathe through gills as they live in the water.
- Examples of amphibians are frogs and salamanders.
- Amphibians are cold blooded

Characteristics of Reptiles:
- Reptiles are covered by dry skin with scales
- Reptiles breathe through their lungs.
- Reptiles reproduce by laying eggs on land.
- Some reptiles have a shell to protect their bodies, such as turtles and tortoises.
- Examples: lizards, crocodiles and snakes.
- Reptiles are cold blooded
