Unit – 1
Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that focuses on creating
machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence.
AI enables machines to learn from experience, adapt to new inputs and perform
human-like activities, such as problem-solving, decision-making and speech
recognition.
1. Definition of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in
machines that are programmed to think and act like humans. The goal is to
develop systems that can perform cognitive functions, including learning,
reasoning, problem-solving, perception and language understanding.
AI can be classified into three main types :
• Narrow AI (Weak AI) : AI that is designed for a specific task (example-
voice assistants like Siri and Alexa).
• General AI (Strong AI) : AI with human-like intelligence that can perform
any intellectual task a human can.
• Super AI : A hypothetical AI that surpasses human intelligence in all
aspects.

2. Goals of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The primary goals of AI include :
1. Automation of Repetitive Tasks : AI aims to automate labor-intensive
tasks, reducing human effort.
2. Enhancing Decision-Making : AI helps in making better and faster
decisions by analyzing vast amounts of data.
3. Mimicking Human Intelligence : AI seeks to replicate human cognitive
abilities like reasoning, problem-solving and learning.
4. Developing Smart Interactions : AI improves human-computer
interactions (example- chatbots and voice assistants).
5. Advancing Scientific Research : AI is used in fields like healthcare, physics
and space exploration to analyze complex problems.
6. Improving Efficiency : AI helps in optimizing processes in industries like
finance, manufacturing and logistics.

3. History of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The development of AI has gone through several phases :
1950s - Early Concepts and Foundations
• Alan Turing (1950) : Proposed the Turing Test to determine if a machine
can exhibit human-like intelligence.
• John McCarthy (1956) : Coined the term "Artificial Intelligence" and
organized the Dartmouth Conference, marking the birth of AI.
1960s-1970s - Growth and Challenges
• Early AI programs like ELIZA (chatbot) and Shakey the Robot were
developed.
• AI faced challenges due to limited computational power and lack of data.
1980s-1990s - AI Revival
• Expert Systems (example- MYCIN for medical diagnosis) gained
popularity.
• Machine Learning became prominent with algorithms like neural
networks.
• AI applications in finance, healthcare and robotics grew.
2000s-Present - AI Boom
• Deep Learning (2010s) : Breakthroughs in neural networks led to
advancements in image recognition and natural language processing
(NLP).
• AI in Everyday Life : AI became part of daily applications like Google
Assistant, self-driving cars and personalized recommendations.
