Part A: Write the basics of your course.
Write your course title and number.
Write your name and contact information.
Write the room where the course meets and days/times the course meets.

Write the full information for your course textbook/materials and if students need to buy the
materials/book(s) or if links can be found in your course management system or books in the
library reserve area.
Write any technologies you will use for the course, such as a course management system
(Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, a school-created one, etc.).
Part B: Write your course description and student learning objectives.
Write your course description: Be sure your course description includes all the topics from your
course but also gives an overall narrative of what holds the course together and why the topic is
important. Course descriptions are usually no more than 6 sentences.
Write 4-6 student learning objectives: For your learning objectives, they should be observable
and measurable. Use action words for the verbs, as discussed in this module.

Part C: Write your assignment list, weighting, and descriptions.
Refer to the video transcript for Video 2.4 and Article 2.5: Sample Syllabus Template for
guidance.
Write a list of your assignments with due dates. The assignments must be more than exams. Be
sure that you include assignments that are engaging for students and allow them to
communicate about your content in English.

Write a description for each assignment. Follow the guidelines from our course on assignment
descriptions. Include the purpose of the assignment and steps students need to take to
complete the assignment.

Part D: Write your course policies.
Identify which policies you will need to include in your syllabus. You must include a policy for
attendance, participation if you grade this area, and plagiarism (also known as academic
honesty). You can include more policies (such as for tardiness, use of mobile devices in class, or
submitting late work) depending on your university requirements. You can review course policy
options from the video transcript for Video 2.4 and Article 2.5: Sample Syllabus Template for
ideas.

Optional Part E: Write your course schedule/timeline.
Write the topic for each week or class meeting.
Write the materials that you will ask students to review or homework that is due for that class.
