Los Angeles has decided to stop students from using smartphones in city schools. This

is because the US government wants to limit the use of these devices. There are also

worries that using smartphones too much can a?ect the mental health of young people.

The school board members has told the school sta? to make a plan to stop students

from using mobile phones and social media during the school day. It is because

research shows that using smartphones too much can cause stress, anxiety,

depression, sleep problems, feelings of anger in teenagers.

In addition, the school board also found that when students don't use phones and

social media during the day, their test scores and exam results improve, as much as an

extra hour of lessons per week. Also, they are happier as they would talk more to each

other and have more social interactions.

Dr Johnny has said that teenagers who spend more than 3 hours a day on social media

are twice as likely to have anxiety and depression. Board member who suggested the

ban, said that schools which have already stopped students from using phones during

the day have seen great results, with students being happier, talking to each other more,

and doing better in their studies.
