REACTION PAPER:
Among the various issues and concerns in early childhood, what do you find that
needs urgent intervention and how could you on your level could provide necessary
action in your school or community?

One of the most challenges in the early years that I observe is basic reading and
language among learners. Learners arrive at school with insufficient vocabulary, trouble
understanding simple texts and limited exposure to books. This is really problematic
because early reading ability is the cornerstone of all future learning.
As a school head, I can only action on programs relating to young learners and their
families. One of my goals is to improve early literacy and school readiness, given the lack of
access for many children at home to books and early learning opportunities. I can lead the
school in providing a print-rich, child friendly environment and guarantee that teachers
engage learners through developmentally appropriate curriculum including storytelling,
rhyming games, play-based instruction and hands-on activities.
I can also reach out to the parents and the community through simple orientations and
capacity-building sessions on how they can support their children at home using everyday
materials. Since the school is in a remote area, I can partner with barangay officials, local
organizations, and volunteers in putting up community reading corners, holding weekend
reading programs, and organizing book or learning-material donation drives.
I can thereby help build strong support systems around our young learners through the
efforts stated above. Consistent guidance, collaboration, and community involvement can
make a big difference in improving early childhood learning in our remote school, with
limited resources.
