TUTORIAL QUESTIONS

QUESTION 1.
Design the main steel reinforcements for critical span and support moments only for panel P1 from Fig.
below slab arrangement, assuming the thickness of the floor is 150 mm as indicated to a design load of
13.00kN/m. The characteristics strength of concrete is 25 N/mm2 and the steel reinforcement is 410 N/mm2.
The cover to steel reinforcement is 20mm and Assume diameter of main and secodary steels to be 12mm.

QUESTION 2.
A reinforced concrete beam which 300 mm wide and 500 mm depth is required to span 6.0m
between centers of supporting columns. The beam carries a dead and imposed load of 15 kN/m
and 10 kN/m respectively. Assuming unit weight of concrete = 24.0 kN/m3
fcu = 20N/mm2 fy = 410N/mm2 Cc= 25mm
Use Y16 as the reinforcement
QUESTION 3.
A. Write down the loading combinations in terms of partial factor of safety as specified by BS8110 for
the Ultimate limit state.
B. In a simple term distinguish between Ultimate Limit State and Serviceability Limit State.
C. For the plane frame shown in Fig. Q3, Sketch all the Sub-frame which might be used for hand
computation, but mentioned the three possible Sub-framing methods first.

QUESTION 4.

A. Show that the Tensile stress in concrete inducing stress by Shrinkage on steel reinforcement in a
reinforced concrete member is:
∈𝑠ℎ 𝐸𝑠 𝐴𝑆 𝐴
𝑓𝑐𝑡 = ∝ 𝐴 Hint: 𝑓𝑐𝑡 = 𝐴𝑆 𝑓𝑠𝑐
(1+ 𝑒 𝑠 )𝐴𝐶 𝐶
𝐴𝑐
B. A reinforced concrete test specimen contains 85% concrete of free shrinkage strain 200x10−6. The
modulus of elasticity of concrete and steel are 200 𝑘𝑁/ 𝑚2 and 20 𝑘𝑁/𝑚2 respectively. Calculate
the Shrinkage stresses in the concrete and steel for shrinkage condition:
I. Restrained by the reinforcement
II. Fully restrained
QUESTION 5.

Derive from first principles the following equations for the ultimate design moment of a singly reinforced
rectangular section in which fcu is the characteristic cube strength of concrete, fy is the characteristic steel
strength, b is the width of the beam and d the effective depth.

, ,
QUESTION 6.
The ultimate design moment to be resisted by the section shown below in Fig. Q4 is 181kNm. The beam
dimensions are breadth, b, 275 mm and effective depth, d, 450 mm.

Fig. Q6.
(i) Use the diagram to determine the area of a tension reinforcement (As) required given the
characteristic material strengths are fcu= 30 N/mm2, fy = 460 N/mm2 for concrete and steel
respectively.
(ii) Use Y16 to provide the number of bars required by the section that will be adequate and sketch the
arrangement by justifying the spacing if maximum size of the coarse aggregate to be used is 20mm.

QUESTION 7.
A. The material strength in design may be less than intended and load in the member may be greater
than anticipated, why?
B. Write down the limit of the area of reinforcement for a given section of concrete member.
C. Why do we check for the limit of area of reinforcement for a given concrete section of a member?
D. If the characteristics cube strength of concrete is 45N/mm2, what is the equivalent characteristics
cylinder strength?
