CHAPTER FIVE
LESSONS LEARNT AND CONCLUSION
1. The career in the military of Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka offers a lot of
lessons in terms of operational art, counter-insurgency strategy, organisational
reforms, and command in a very difficult situation in terms of strategic-level
operations. His command and leadership at the last stage of the Humanitarian
operation is a mixture of strategic understanding, organisational change, and personal
determination. Leadership lessons can be derived from Field Marshal Sarath
Fonseka’s leadership during the humanitarian operation paly vital role for all levels of
military leaders. Some of the lessons that can be derived from his leadership are as
follows:
2. Operational Decisiveness in Complex Environments Leadership in
high intensity operation requires quick but correct decision-making. Field Marshal
Sarath Fonseka had shown that he was capable of evaluating realities that were on the
battlefields and adjusting operational plans to suit these situations during critical times
in the military operations. He was not compelled to follow a set of premeditated
strategies but changed the force positions and tactics according to the changing
ground conditions. This flexibility greatly boosted performance and military success
in the whole Humanitarian operation against the LTTE. His example supports the idea
that flexibility and apt judgment are the key elements of contemporary operational
situations.
3. Strategic Shift Toward Sustained Offensive Action. One of the significant
changes during Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka's tenure was the change in operational
setup according to the demand. During the initial phase of the Humanitarian operation
with the operation Mavil Aru, a defensive behaviour became offensive with the
demanding situation. Moreover, the continuity of offensive actions, which was
achieved due to the joint efforts of ground, naval, and air operations, did not allow the
LTTE to organise and take the offensive. This prolonged offensive position showed
that organised and consistent operations were able to defeat the LTTE movements.
The lesson is still especially applicable to the modern counterinsurgency.

4. Enhancement of Intelligence and Technological Application. The
other important aspect of his leadership was the value of proper, timely intelligence
and the incorporation of modern technology. During the Humanitarian operation the
his intelligence operation in Eastern province showcased the effective intelligence
mechanism that was used to gather information on the LTTE. The intelligence
mechanisms were restructured to enhance coordination, accuracy and responsiveness.
This reorganisation enabled it to target better, less operational uncertainty, and better
synchronisation of units. Combining intelligence and innovation enhanced battlefield
awareness and helped to execute the mission more effectively.
5. Command Effectiveness in Integrated Military Operations. The success
of an individual force during the operations was not sufficient to achieve operational
success. During the Humanitarian operation, a concerted action between the Army,
Navy, and Air Force resulted in conclusive results. The depth of operations, logistical
support and force protection was enhanced with joint planning and execution. The
integration of land, sea and air forces demonstrated the effectiveness of integrated
command systems and inter-service coordination in the attainment of strategic goals.
6. Personal Fortitude and Inspirational Leadership. The credibility of
leadership is usually put to the test in times of personal difficulty. Field Marshal
Sarath Fonseka, who survived a serious assassination attempt in 2006, came back to
active command and commanded the military operations in a critical period of the
conflict. With his perseverance, he boosted morale among the ranks, and this was
symbolic of perseverance when one faced a threat. This kind of individual bravery
underscores the larger leadership concept of perseverance and dedication, creating
confidence and solidarity in the subordinates.
7. Performance-Oriented Leadership and Organisational Discipline. Field
Marshal Sarath Fonseka did not emphasise seniority in appointing commanders but
was keen on ability and performance, with the choice of officers being determined as
dynamic and forward-looking in relation to appointments to critical operational
requirements. He has reorganised structures and disbanded units to eliminate
inefficiencies and has encouraged a culture of responsibility and quantifiable
outcomes. He gave impetus to merit-based leadership at all levels to enhance

operational efficiency and institutional discipline. This meritocracy focus also
provides a scalable lesson to any stressful organisation, and it goes to show that
performance-based leadership not only boosts efficiency, flexibility, and success in
general beyond the military sector.
CONCLUSION
8. Sri Lanka’s military victory against the LTTE was shaped significantly by
organisational reforms, strategic reorientation, and operational integration
implemented during Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka’s tenure. His focus on sustained
offensive operations, modernisation of intelligence structures, and enhanced joint-
force coordination contributed to the dismantling of the LTTE’s operational capacity
after nearly three decades of conflict.
9. Beyond immediate battlefield outcomes, his leadership left a lasting
institutional impact on the Sri Lanka Army’s professionalism, training standards, and
operational preparedness. By emphasising discipline, modernisation, and strategic
planning, he strengthened the long-term capability of the armed forces to safeguard
national security.
He is also one of the most powerful military figures in the history of Sri Lanka. His
legacy can be seen in bringing the war to an end in 2009, as well as in the principles
of leadership that he will always have, which are decisive execution, relentless pursuit
of strategic goals, good integration of joint forces, and commitment to national
security.
10. To modern military leaders and policymakers, his experience is a valuable and
educative lesson based on strategic determination, the ability to fight and withstand
until the end and the incorporation of an unswerving devotion to the protection of the
state. The lessons which his command taught the world are still highly relevant and
professionally important as Sri Lanka and the rest of the international community
have to deal with new and sophisticated security issues.
