Exponents
Grade 7
A short way to describe a calculation
5+5+5 ( repeated addition)
3x5
How many times The number that appears
the number appears
Repeated Multiplication
Exponents enable us to write repeated multiplication in a shorthand
way
5 x 5 x 5 = 53
This way is called exponential notation.
repeated

number
How do we write exponents?
exponent or index
3 2
power
base
We multiply the base by itself for the number of times
indicated by the exponent.
How do we say it?
• We write 32
• We say “three to the power of two”
Example 1
43 =4x4x4
Base is 4
Exponent is 3
Therefore, we multiply 4 by itself three times.
Example 2
25 =2x2x2x2x2
Base is 2
Exponent is 5
Therefore, we multiply 2 by itself five times.
BE CAREFUL!
• Do not confuse 43 with 4 x 3
✓4 3 =4x4x4 not X 43 = 4 x 3
• Why?
4x4x4 4x3
= 16 x 4 = 12
= 64
Let’s summarise!
