What is Scanning?
The way of reading a text quickly for specific
information or details
What is the difference between Skimming
and Scanning?
• Skimming and Scanning are the quick ways of reading a
text.
• Skimming is quick reading to grasp the general idea of
a text.
• Scanning is also quick reading of a text but it is
searching to discover main ideas or important
information which you require or you want to know.
HOW TO SCAN?
• Since you want specific information, the best way to find out the
information you want is, by moving your finger fast along the lines.(
your running of eyes along the lines will also help you)
• Where you find the information, read it closely.
• For ex: You want to find out your friend’s Hall Ticket Number, move
your finger along the numbers displayed in the notice board.
• You can follow the same way while searching for the arrival and
departure timings of trains in railway stations
What is important to know?
• As a reader, you should have a clear idea of
why you are reading a text.
• If you want overall idea or gist, you can skim.
If you want any special information, you can
scan.
• Do not read the whole text. Read for what you
want.
Learning Outcome
• You can save time by avoiding reading the
whole text.
