Investigatory Project Rusting Final

The investigatory project by Rahul focuses on the rusting of iron, aiming to study the conditions necessary for rusting and how different environments affect its rate. The experiment involves three test tubes with varying conditions, revealing that rusting occurs only in the presence of both air and moisture. The project concludes that rusting can be prevented by eliminating either oxygen or water.

INVESTIGATORY PROJECT IN CHEMISTRY

Topic: Rusting of Iron

Submitted By:
Rahul
Class: 12A
Session: 2025–2026
School: Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan No. 2, Delhi Cantt
Teacher: Mrs. Rashmi Singh
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my Chemistry teacher, Mrs. Rashmi Singh,
for her valuable guidance and encouragement throughout the completion of this project. I
would also like to thank my school, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan No.2, Delhi Cantt, for
providing me with the facilities and environment to carry out this work.

CERTIFICATE
This is to certify that Rahul, a student of Class 12A, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan No.2,
Delhi Cantt, has successfully completed the investigatory project on 'Rusting of Iron' under
the guidance of Mrs. Rashmi Singh during the academic session 2025–2026.

AIM
To study the conditions necessary for the rusting of iron and to investigate how different
environments affect the rate of rusting.

INTRODUCTION
Rusting of iron is a common example of corrosion in which iron reacts with oxygen and
moisture present in the environment to form a reddish-brown flaky substance called rust
(Fe₂O₃·xH₂O). It weakens the metal and causes heavy losses in industry and daily life.

CHEMICAL REACTION
4Fe + 3O₂ + 6H₂O → 4Fe(OH)₃

Fe(OH)₃ → Fe₂O₃·xH₂O (Rust)

MATERIALS REQUIRED
• 3 clean iron nails
• Test tubes
• Distilled water
• Boiled water
• Oil layer
• Calcium chloride
• Corks

PROCEDURE
1. Label three test tubes as A, B, and C.
2. Place one clean iron nail in each test tube.
3. (A) Add distilled water to cover the nail halfway and leave it exposed to air.
4. (B) Add boiled distilled water and cover it with a thin layer of oil to prevent air contact.
5. (C) Add calcium chloride to keep the environment dry and cork it tightly.
6. Leave all three test tubes for a few days and observe the changes.
OBSERVATIONS
• Tube A: Nail gets covered with reddish-brown rust.
• Tube B: No rust is formed.
• Tube C: No rust is formed.

CONCLUSION
Rusting of iron requires both air (oxygen) and water (moisture). If any one of these is
absent, rusting does not take place.

PRECAUTIONS
• Use clean and dry test tubes and nails.
• Handle chemicals carefully.
• Keep observations for several days for accurate results.
