How Culture Shapes Human Behavior
I. Introduction
Culture refers to the shared beliefs, values, customs, traditions,
language, and social behaviors of a particular group of people. It
influences how individuals think, act, communicate, and interact with
others.
Culture is learned, shared, and passed down from generation to
generation.
II. What is Culture?
Culture includes:
Beliefs – Ideas about what is true or false
Values – What a society considers important
Norms – Rules about how people should behave
Language – System of communication
Traditions and customs – Practices passed through generations
Arts and symbols – Music, dance, clothing, rituals, etc.
III. How Culture Influences Human Behavior
1. Shapes Our Identity
Culture influences:
How we see ourselves
Our sense of belonging
Gender roles and family roles
National or ethnic identity
2. Influences Communication
Culture affects:
Language and dialect
Tone of voice
Body language
Eye contact
Respectful gestures (e.g., “po” and “opo” in Filipino culture)
Different cultures interpret gestures and expressions differently.
3. Guides Social Behavior
Culture sets expectations about:
Proper manners
Respect for elders
Dating and marriage practices
Work ethics
Public behavior
4. Shapes Moral Values and Decision-Making
Culture influences:
What is considered right or wrong
Religious beliefs
Ethical standards
Law and justice systems
People from different cultures may respond differently to the same situation
because of their values.
Enculturation, Inculturation and Acculturation
1. Enculturation
A process of learning from infancy till death, the components of life in one’s
culture. The contents of this learning include both the material and non-
material culture
2. Inculturation
Refers to the “missiological process in which the Gospel is rooted in a
particular culture and the latter is transformed by its introduction to
Christianity.”
3. Acculturation
Acculturation is another big term. It is the “cultural modification of an
individual, group, or people by adapting to or borrowing traits from another
culture”. It is also explained as the merging of cultures as a result of
prolonged contact”.
How culture shapes moral agent
1. Culture definitely affects the way we evaluate and judge
things.
2. Culture has a very long lasting hold on an individual.
