DESIGN AND PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF

SHELLS AND DOMES

LECTURE BY
N S RAJENDRAN
Director, AEDBM Consultants Private Limited
SHELLS
• A shell is a three-dimensional solid structural element whose thickness is very
small compared to its other dimensions. It is characterized in structural terms by
in-plane stress which is both coplanar and normal to the surface.

Why shell structures posses

smaller thickness….!

STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR
The weight of domes produces downward and outward thrusts.
1) Downward thrust must be transferred to the foundations, while
2) Outward thrust must be resisted to prevent the dome from collapsing.

This resistance can be provided by the mass of the supporting walls, by buttresses, or by a
tension element such as Tie beam.
