MEASURING ANGLES USING A PROTRACTOR

1. What is a Protractor?

A protractor is a tool used to measure angles in degrees (°). A half-circle protractor measures from
0° to 180°. A full-circle protractor measures from 0° to 360°.

2. Parts of a Protractor

• Center hole – placed exactly on the vertex of the angle.

• Base line (0° line) – one side of the angle must align here.

• Outer scale – numbers increase from left to right.

• Inner scale – numbers increase from right to left.

3. Steps in Measuring an Angle

• Step 1: Place the center hole exactly on the vertex.

• Step 2: Align one ray of the angle with the 0° line.

• Step 3: Read the number where the second ray crosses the scale.

• Step 4: Make sure you read from the correct scale (where it starts at 0°).

4. Types of Angles Review

• Acute angle – less than 90°.

• Right angle – exactly 90°.

• Obtuse angle – more than 90° but less than 180°.

• Straight angle – exactly 180°.

• Reflex angle – more than 180° but less than 360°.

5. Important Reminders

• Always place the center exactly on the vertex.

• Align the base line properly before reading.

• Check if you are using the correct number scale.

• Angles are measured in degrees (°).
