Past Modals: should have / would have

We use should have + past participle to talk about something that was a good idea, but it didn’t
happen.
(Usamos should have + participio pasado para hablar de algo que era una buena idea, pero no
ocurrió.)

✔️ You should have studied more.


(Deberías haber estudiado más.)

❌ You shouldn’t have shouted.


(No deberías haber gritado.)

We use would have + past participle to talk about what someone wanted or planned to do, but
it didn’t happen.
(Usamos would have + participio pasado para hablar de algo que alguien quería o planeaba
hacer, pero no pasó.)

✔️ I would have helped you.


(Te habría ayudado.)

❌ I wouldn’t have said that.


(Yo no habría dicho eso.)

Questions

Use should have to ask for advice about the past:

Use would have to ask what someone wanted to do in the past:
