Iran – Brief Overview

Iran (officially the Islamic Republic of Iran) is a country in Western Asia located on the Iranian
Plateau.
It is one of the largest countries in the Middle East by land area and population.
Its capital and largest city is Tehran.

History & Government:


Iran has a long history that goes back thousands of years and was home to some of the earliest
civilizations.
In 1979, a revolution transformed it into an Islamic republic.
The political system combines religious authority and elected institutions, with the Supreme Leader
holding the highest power.

People & Culture:


Most people speak Persian (Farsi) and follow Shi’a Islam, though many ethnic and religious groups
live there.
Iran has a rich cultural heritage known for its poetry, art, architecture, and traditions that trace back
to ancient Persia.

Economy & Geography:


Iran’s economy is heavily based on its large oil and natural gas reserves, but also includes
agriculture, manufacturing, and services.
The country uses the rial as its currency.
Much of its land is mountainous or desert, with diverse climates across regions.
