M4 Content Guide 8 TH Grade Math

This document is a content guide for an 8th-grade math module focused on congruence, outlining learning outcomes, practices, and exercises related to determining and proving congruence of figures through rigid transformations. It includes activities that encourage students to reflect on personal characteristics and emulate respected individuals through congruent triangles. The guide also covers topics such as congruent figures, comparing them, proving congruence with transformations, and using algebra to establish congruence.

8th Grade Math: Part 1

Module 4 Content Guide

Congruence

Learning Outcomes
After completing this module students will be able to:
1. Determine if figures are congruent or not.
2. Prove that figures are congruent by using rigid transformations.

Math Master Mindset Challenge

People often respect someone who is the same regardless of the situation or who they are talking
to. Congruent shapes have the same angles and side lengths no matter how they have been
moved.
Identify an authentic person you know and respect. Draw two congruent triangles. On the first
triangle, write the name of the person you respect in the middle and write your own name in the
middle of the other triangle. On the first triangle, write good characteristics of the person on each
vertex of the triangle. On the second, congruent triangle, write ways you can emulate them on
each corresponding vertex.

Module 4 Content Guide

Topic 4.1 Congruent Figures (Part A)

How can we determine if figures are congruent?

Two (or more) figures are congruent if the lengths of the sides are the same (distances on rounded
shapes are the same) and if the angles are the same.

Modeled Practice 2: Write congruence

statements for the sides and the angles of the AD is congruent to EH
trapezoids. BC is congruent to FG
Angle ABC is congruent to Angle EHG

D H
A E

B C F G

Modeled Practice 3: Look at the following set of No, the figures are not congruent. While the angles
figures. Are they congruent? Explain your are the same in both figures, the sides in the blue
reasoning. triangle are much longer than the sides in the red
triangle.

Topic 4.1 Congruent Figures (Part B)

Guided Practice 1: In the diagram, determine if the shapes are congruent or not. If not, Explain why in your
content guide.

The figures are not congruent, because the sides are not the same in both figures.

Guided Practice 2: Which of the following figures are congruent to the top figure? Explain your reasoning in
the content guide.

A is congruent to the top figure because the circle is in the same placement as the figure above. Also, the
sides and angles of A are the same as the figure above.

Topic 4.2 Comparing Congruent Figures (Part A)

Modeled Practice 1: Write a congruence statement for the two triangles.

F P

G H Q R

ΔFGH ⩭ ΔPQR

Modeled Practice 2: Below are two figures that meet the following statement: 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 ≅ 𝐾𝐾𝐾𝐾𝐾𝐾𝐾𝐾. Using the
figures provided, what is the measure of ∠𝐴𝐴?

In the figures provided, D is 130° due to congruence.

Topic 4.2 Comparing Congruent Figures (Part B)

Guided Practice 1: Polygons 𝐴𝐴 and 𝐴𝐴 can be Statements A, D, and E are true about
translated to each other. Which statements given are polygons A and B.
true about Polygon 𝐴𝐴 and 𝐴𝐴? Select all that apply.

A. Segment 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 and segment 𝐽𝐽𝐾𝐾 are the same length.

B. ∠𝐴𝐴 is congruent to∠𝐺𝐺
C. Segment 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 and segment 𝐻𝐻𝐽𝐽 are the same length.
D.∠𝐴𝐴 is congruent to∠𝐽𝐽
E. Polygon 𝐴𝐴 is congruent to Polygon 𝐴𝐴.

Guided Practice 2: Using the given figures, what is the measure of ∠𝐴𝐴? What is the measure of segment 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴?

The measure of D is 59°, and the measure of segment DA is 7 units.

Topic 4.3 Proving Congruence with Transformations (Part A)

What are the three different rigid motions?

Reflection - a transformation across a line (the line of reflection)
Rotation - A transformation about a certain point
Translation - A transformation in which all of the points of a shape move the same way.

Modeled Practice 1: Which rigid motions was(were) used to prove that these two figures are congruent?

The rigid motions used to prove that these two figures are congruent were reflecting over the y-axis
and rotating the then-reflected figure 90° counterclockwise.

Topic 4.3 Proving Congruence with Transformations (Part B)

Guided Practice 1: Polygon 𝑄𝑄 is the image of Polygon 𝑃𝑃 after a sequence of rigid transformations.
Suppose a student claim that 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 is congruent to 𝐹𝐹𝐺𝐺𝐻𝐻𝐹𝐹𝐽𝐽. Is the student correct? Explain your
reasoning in your content guide.

The student is correct, because Polygon Q is Polygon P reflected and rotated 90° counterclockwise
.

Guided Practice 2: State the sequence of rigid

transformations that takes triangle 𝐴𝐴 to triangle 𝐴𝐴 to
triangle 𝐴𝐴.

Triangle B is triangle A reflected, and Triangle C is triangle B translated down and right.

Topic 4.4 Using Algebra to Prove Congruence

Modeled Practice 1: What are the corresponding parts of the A, B, C, and D are all examples of
figures below? Select all that apply. corresponding parts.

A. ∠𝐴𝐴 ≅ ∠𝐴𝐴

B. ∠𝐴𝐴 ≅ ∠𝐴𝐴

C. 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 ≅ 𝐴𝐴𝐹𝐹

D. 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 ≅ 𝐹𝐹𝐴𝐴

Guided Practice 1: Suppose that △ 𝑃𝑃𝑄𝑄𝑃𝑃 is the image of△ 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 after some sequence of rigid
transformation such that △ 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 ≅ △ 𝑃𝑃𝑄𝑄𝑃𝑃. Which statements would be true here? Select all that apply.

B and C are true statements.

A. 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 ≅ 𝑄𝑄𝑃𝑃

B.∠C𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 ≅ ∠𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑄𝑄

C. C𝐴𝐴 ≅ 𝑃𝑃𝑄𝑄

D. ∠ 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 ≅ ∠𝑄𝑄𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃

E. None of the above are true.

Guided Practice 2: Are the regular hexagons

Math Masters Challenge

At the beginning of this module, you were supposed to draw two congruent triangles. On the
first triangle you wrote the name of the person you respect. In the second triangle you wrote
your own name. You then wrote characteristics of the person on each vertex of their triangle and
ways you can emulate them on each vertex of your triangle.

Reflection Question: Explain how emulating the three characteristics of the person you respect
will improve you character. What do you plan to do to continue to emulate the person you
respect?
