041 BASIC MATHEMATICS
(For Both School and Private Candidates)

1. This paper consists of section A and B with a total of fourteen (14) questions.
2. Answer all questions from each section.
3. Mathematical tables and Scientific calculators may be used where necessary.
4. Cellular phones and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the
examination room.
5. Write your Examination number on every page of your answer booklet(s).

SECTION A (60 Marks)
Answer all questions

1. a) Three wooden rods of length 168cm, 72cm and 90cm are cut into pieces of the same
lengths. Find the greatest possible length for these pieces of roads if no wooden rod is
left without cut.
b) By converting x  567567567 ... and y  83 into a/b where b≠0. Find the value of xy .

2. a) Solve for x in the equation; log 5 x  (81)0.25

3. a) In a class of 36 students every one studies Biology or Physics or both. If 9 students


study both subjects and 12 study physics but not Biology, by using a Venn diagram show
how many students study Biology but not Physics?
b) From part (a) above calculate the probability of the students who:-
i. Study biology but not physics
ii. Either biology or physics
iii. Both biology and physics
4. a) Show that the triangle whose vertices are P(4,-4),Q(-6,-2) and R (2,6) is an Isosceles
triangle.
b) If a  4 i  3 j and b  6 i  3 j . Find the value of “h” and “k” if h a k b  10 i  j

5. a) i. Find the radius (r) and area (A) of regular Hexagon inscribed in a circle whose
perimeter is 42cm.

ii. Prove that ∆ 𝐴𝐵𝐷 is congruent to ∆ 𝐴𝐶𝐷 below (∆ 𝐴𝐵𝐷 ≌ ∆ 𝐴𝐶𝐷)

6. a) The speed of water leakage from KAHAMA UWASA tank (T1) is directly proportional
of water leakage from ISAGEHE tank (T2) to Kagongwa residents and is inversely
proportional to the thickness (t) of the pipes. If 𝑇1 = 9𝑐𝑚/𝑠𝑒𝑐,
𝑇2 = 15𝑐𝑚/𝑠𝑒𝑐 and =𝑡 = 6𝑐𝑚. Find the value of t if 𝑇1 = 12𝑐𝑚/𝑠𝑒𝑐 and
𝑇2 = 10𝑐𝑚/𝑠𝑒𝑐

b) A rectangular tank with the base area of 3.5m2 and height of 1.2m was provided to the
School as donation for preserving water. How many litres of water it can hold when it is
filled? (take 1litre of water =1000cm3)

7. a) A house was sold at profit of 1,900,000 Tanzania Shillings. If the percentage profit was
25%. What was the buying price of the house?

b) On 1st February 2024 Mr. Juma started business with capital in cash Sh 250,000/=
2nd February purchases goods for cash Sh. 70,000/=

Enter the above transactions in a cash account and balance it.

8. a) A Lorry moves stones from quarry beside a straight road under construction and deposits
the stone at intervals of 25 meters along the road. If the Lorry starts from the quarry and
deposits the first load of stone at a point 60 meters away, how far will the Lorry have
moved after transporting 30 loads of stones and returning to the quarry at the end?

b) Given that 8, 𝑥, 𝑦, 27 from the first four consecutive terms of a geometric sequence,
find 𝑥 and 𝑦.
9. a) The angle of depression of a boat from a light house 30m high is 40º. How far is the boat
from the foot of the light house?
b) Find the value of X in the figure below.

10. a) The length of class room is 4m more than the width and the area is 221m2. Find the
dimension of the floor.
b) Solve the equation 2𝑥 2 – 3𝑥 − 5 = 0 by completing the square

11. a) Two chords of lengths 24cm and 10cm are found on one side of the centre of the circle
of radius 13cm. find the distance between them.
b) Carefully study the frequency distribution table which shows the marks of 100
students in History Examination.

12. a) A ship sails from Pemba (4.5ºS, 39.5°𝐸) to Dar es Salaam (7.5ºE, 39.5°𝐸). If it leaves
Pemba at 11:30am and arrives in Dar Es Salaam at 13:30Pm. Use 𝜋 = 22/7 and R=6370
to find the speed of the ship in Km/h
b) ABCD is the base and EFGH is the top of a cube. ̅̅̅̅

13. a) A woman own 60 domestic animals. Each of her domestic animals is either a cow or a
chicken. If domestic animals have a total of 200legs, use the matrix method to find the
number of cows and the number of chickens which the woman owns.
b) Find the coordinates of a point P (1,2) after a reflection in the line 𝑦 = √3𝑥 (Leave
your answer in surd form)

14. a) (i) Sketch the graph of f(x) given that,

(iii) Use the graph above to find 𝑓(−1) and 𝑓(4)
b). NDEGESELA small industry company makes two types of Iron Sheets normally type
A and B. Each type A takes 3hours to produce and uses 6 rollers of materials and each type B
Takes 6 hours to produce and uses 7 rollers of materials. The worker can work for a total
of 60hours and there are 90 rollers of materials available. If the profit on type A is
40,000/= and on type B is 60,000/=, find how many of each type the company should produce
to make maximum profit?
