Modeling
The Meta-Model
The Meta-Model is a linguistic tool and framework used in coaching, therapy, and
communication to explore and clarify the underlying structure of a person's
thoughts, beliefs, and language patterns. It was developed by linguist and therapist
Richard Bandler and John Grinder, the founders of Neuro-Linguistic Programming
(NLP)
Key components of the Meta-Model
Deletions Generalizations Distortions
Language patterns that leave Language patterns that make Language patterns that
out specific information, broad, sweeping statements misrepresent information or
leading to incomplete without specifying details or provide an inaccurate
understanding exceptions perspective
EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE
"I always fail at Everyone ignores my ideas." My boss never appreciates my
presentations." Clarify: Who specifically is efforts."
Challenge: "Always" implies a ignoring your ideas? Can you Investigate: Can you recall a
constant pattern. Are there think of any situations where specific instance where your
no instances of successful someone did pay attention? boss did not appreciate your
presentations? efforts?
Application in coaching
Uncovering assumptions
Coaches use the Meta-Model to gently challenge generalized or distorted statements,
helping coachees clarify their thinking and uncover hidden assumptions
Enhancing clarity
By asking for specifics, coaches encourage coachees to provide more detailed information,
which can lead to a clearer understanding of the situation
Breaking limiting beliefs
The Meta-Model can assist coachees in challenging limiting beliefs by asking for evidence
or counterexamples that contradict those beliefs
Improving communication
Learning about language patterns through the Meta-Model helps coachees become more
effective communicators, both in coaching sessions and in their interactions with others
Metaprograms
Metaprograms are cognitive filters or mental patterns that shape how individuals
perceive and respond to the world around them. They influence a person's thinking,
decision-making, communication style, and behavior. Metaprograms are an integral
part of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and are used in coaching to gain
insights into an individual's preferences, motivations, and strategies
Key characteristics of Metaprograms
Preference-based
Metaprograms reflect a person's tendencies and preferences in processing
information and making decisions
Consistency
Metaprograms are relatively consistent over time and across various
situations.
Unconscious
Individuals are often unaware of their metaprogram patterns, as they
operate at a subconscious level.
Influence on behavior
Metaprograms influence how individuals perceive and interact with the
world, impacting their communication, problem-solving, and decision-
making
Application in coaching
Enhancing communication
Understanding a coachee's metaprograms allows the coach to communicate in ways that
resonate with the coachee's cognitive preferences
Goal setting
Metaprograms can influence how coachees set and pursue goals.
Problem solving
Coaches can tailor problem-solving approaches based on coachees' metaprograms, ensuring
the strategies are in alignment with their thinking patterns
Managing change
Recognizing metaprograms helps coaches design change strategies that match the coachee's
preference for moving toward positive outcomes or away from negative ones
Building rapport
Coaches who understand a coachee's metaprograms can establish rapport more effectively by
using language and strategies that resonate with the coachee's thinking style
Modeling
Modeling in coaching refers to the process of observing, studying, and learning from
successful individuals, strategies, behaviors, or systems in order to replicate or adapt
their success. It involves identifying and understanding the key factors that
contribute to desired outcomes and applying those insights to one's own goals and
aspirations
Key concepts in Modeling
Role models
Role models are individuals who have achieved success in a specific area
that is relevant to a coachee's goals
Behavioral patterns
Modeling involves analyzing and adopting specific behaviors, habits, and
actions that have contributed to someone's success
Mindsets and beliefs
Successful individuals often possess certain mindsets, beliefs, and attitudes
that support their achievements
Strategies and techniques
Identifying effective strategies, techniques, and approaches used by
successful individuals can help coachees improve their performance and
results
Steps in Modeling
Identify a model
Select a role model or source of inspiration who embodies the success
you're aiming for
Observe and study
Study the model's behaviors, actions, strategies, and mindset
Extract key factors
Identify the key factors that contribute to the model's success
Adapt and apply
Adapt the insights you've gained from the model to your own context
Practice and iterate
Implement the modeled behaviors and strategies into your own life or
work
Application in coaching
Inspiration
Modeling provides coachees with real-life examples of what's possible, motivating them to
strive for their goals
Learning
Coachees can learn valuable lessons from the successes and challenges of role models,
accelerating their growth and development
Customization
Coaches help coachees adapt modeled behaviors and strategies to align with their unique
strengths, values, and goals
Accountability
Modeling provides a benchmark for coachees to track their progress and hold themselves
accountable for implementing positive changes
Confidence
Successfully implementing modeled strategies can boost coachees' confidence and belief in
their own potential
