Viewing genre is about the types of programs or videos we watch. It tells us what kind of program it is and
why it was made. For example, news, movies, or commercials are all different viewing genres. Knowing the
genre helps us understand the purpose of what we watch and decide if we want to watch it.

-Can anyone share a program they watch at home? Why do you watch it— to learn or just for fun?

A viewing genre is like a category for videos or shows. When you watch a weather report on TV before going
to school, you know whether it will rain or be sunny. That is knowing the genre.

Understanding genres is important because it helps us know the purpose of the program, expect what will
happen, choose what we want to watch, and think carefully about what we see. For example, if you watch a
documentary, you expect real facts, not a made-up story. If you watch a movie, you know it is for
entertainment.

-Third slide

Let’s start with News Flash. News Flash gives important and urgent information. It is fast and short, like
breaking news or emergency announcements. For example, when there is an earthquake or flood, the news
flash tells people immediately what to do. Have you ever seen a news flash on TV? What was it about? Next is
the Weather Report, which gives information about the weather, such as the daily forecast or storm
warnings. You watch it to know if you need an umbrella or a jacket before going to school.

Documentaries show real facts and events. They can be about nature or history. For example, a video about
endangered animals in the Philippines is a documentary because it shows real-life events and teaches us
something. Can you think of a documentary you have watched, and what did you learn from it? Movies
entertain us with stories. They can be funny, scary, or exciting, like action or drama movies. Films like The Lion
King or Spider-Man are movies because they tell a story to entertain.

Advertisements or commercials promote products or services. Their goal is to make us buy or try something.
For example, when you see a commercial for a new snack on YouTube, that is an advertisement. Have you ever
bought something because of a commercial? Remember, each viewing genre has a different purpose. Knowing
the genre helps us be smart and responsible viewers. Why is it important to know the type of program before
watching it? Now that we know about viewing genres, let’s watch wisely and think critically about what we
