Law & Related Problems)

1. Find the gradient of the following: (a) f (x, y, z) = x2 + y 3 + z 4 , (b) f (s, φ, z) = s cos φ
(c) f (r, θ, φ) = r sin θ sin φ
2. Check the fundamental theorem for gradient using T = x2 + 4xy + 2yz 3 , the points
a = (0, 0, 0, ) , b = (1, 1, 1) and three paths (i) (0, 0, 0) → (1, 0, 0) → (1, 1, 0) →
(1, 1, 1) (ii) (0, 0, 0) → (0, 0, 1) → (0, 1, 1) → (1, 1, 1) (iii) z = x2 , y = x
3. Calculate the Curl of of the following vector function: (a) F = x2 x̂ + 3xz 2 ŷ − 2xzẑ
(b) F = 2ŝ + 3φ̂
4. Compute the divergence of the function F = s(2 + sin2 φ)ŝ + (s sin φ cos φ)φ̂ + 3zẑ
Check the divergence theorem for given function over a volume given in Fig. 1 (a).

5. Check the divergence theorem for F = (r cos θ)r̂ + (r sin θ)θ̂ + (r sin θ cos φ)φ̂. Ref.

6. Suppose F = (2xz + 3y 2 )ŷ + (4yz 2 )ẑ. Check the Stoke’s theorem for the square
surface shown in the Fig. 2 (a).
7. Check Stoke’s theorem by taking a vector field F = −x̂y + ŷx and the disk surface
as shown in the Fig. 2 (b). [Hint: Express the vector field in Cylindrical Coordinate
System.]
8. Compute the line integral of the

F = r̂(r cos2 θ) − θ̂(r cos θ sin θ) + φ̂(3r),

around the path shown in Fig. 3 (the points are labeled by their Cartesian coordi-
nates). Do it either in cylindrical or in spherical coordinates. Check your answer,
using Stokes’ theorem.

9. Find the electric field a distance z above the midpoint of a straight line segment of
length 2L, which carries a uniform line charge λ as shown in Fig. 4. Check you
result is consistent with what you would expect when z ≫ L.

10. (a) Calculate electric field a distance z above the center of square loop of side a,
carrying a uniform line charge λ as shown in the Fig. 4.
(b) Calculate electric field a distance z above the center of circular loop of radius a
