1) Add a little copper carbonate to a beaker containing 50 cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid.
2) Stir the mixture.
3) Continue adding copper carbonate until there is excess carbonate that does not react.
4) Filter the mixture and collect the filtrate (copper chloride solution) in a conical flask.
5) Pour the filtrate into an evaporating dish and heat it gently to evaporate most of the water.
6) Allow the saturated solution to cool and crystallise.
7) Dry the copper chloride crystals on a piece of filter paper.
