QUICK REFERENCE - QUESTION FORMATION
Present Simple:
• YES/NO: Do/Does ( 3 os.l. poj) + subject + verb (work/teach)?
• WH-: Question word + do/does + subject + verb (base form)?
Past Simple:
• YES/NO: Did + subject + verb (base form)? Did you see the movie yesterday? Yes, I did./No, I
didn’t.
• WH-: Question word + did + subject + verb (base form)? When did you go to Italy? I went to
Italy 5 years ago.
Do – did - done
Special case - verb "to be":
• Present: Am/Is/Are + subject...? Are you tired? Is she angry?
• Past: Was/Were + subject...? Were you at home yesterday? Was she ill last week?
Remember:
• In questions, the main verb returns to base form (infinitive without "to")
• Don't use -s/-es or -ed in questions (the auxiliary do/does/did shows the tense)
• Exception: verb "to be" - no auxiliary needed!
