MAM1020F Tutorial 7a 5-6 April 2022
x2 − 4x + 3
1. Without using any derivatives, sketch the graph f (x) = 2 .
x − 4x + 4
2. (a) Use the definition of√the derivative of a function at a point to find
f 0 (4) where f (x) = 2x + 1
(b) Find the equation of the tangent line to f at x = 4.
3. Draw rough graphs (3 graphs, one for each of (a), (b) and (c)) of
functions y = f (x) for which
(a) lim f (x) exists and lim f (x) 6= f (1)
x→1 x→1
f (1 + h) − f (1)
(b) lim f (x) = lim
x→1 h→0 h
f (1 + h) − f (1) f (1 + h) − f (1)
(c) lim− 6= lim+
h→0 h h→0 h
4. We give you here a proof of some mathematical fact and ask you to an-
swer questions about it; read the proof and then answer the questions.
Suppose that g is differentiable
that g(a) 6= 0.
at a and (A)
1 1 1
We consider lim − . (B)
x→a x − a g(x) g(a)
1 g(a) − g(x)
This is lim , (C)
x→a x − a g(x) · g(a)
g(x) − g(a) −1
which can be written as lim . (D)
x→a x−a g(x) · g(a)
Now answer the following questions:
(a) Evaluate the limit in line (D); what do you get?
(b) What fact have you proved now?
(c) Which rules for working with limits did you use to get your answer
to (a).
(d) You probably used the fact that g(x) → g(a) as x → a to get your
answer to (a); how do you know this is true?
f (x) 1
(e) Now write as f (x) · and use the above and the product
g(x) g(x)
0
f
rule for derivatives to find (a).

You may be worried in the above proof that, in line (B) and elsewhere,
g(x) could be 0 even though g(a) isn’t. This would turn the proof into
nonsense! It turns out that, because g(a) 6= 0 and g is continuous at a,
then for values of x close to a, g(x) 6= 0 too, and that’s good enough.

x + 2x + 1 if x ≥ 0
5. We define h(x) = where a and b are arbitrary
ax + b if x < 0
constants.
(a) How should you choose a and b so that h is continuous at x = 0?
(b) How should you choose a and b so that h is differentiable at x = 0?
6. Let a function f : R → R be defined by
x+1 x≤1
f (x) =
a(x − 2)2 + b x>1
where a and b are constants chosen so that f is differentiable at x = 1.
Find the value of f (2).

7. Let f (x) = .
x+2
(a) What is the domain of this function?
(b) Sketch the graph of y = f (x)
(c) For which values of x is f 0 (x) > 0? For which values of x is
f 0 (x) < 0?
(d) Find f 0 (1) from first principles.
(e) Write down the equation of the line tangent to y = f (x) at x = 1.
2x
8. Find an equation of the tangent line to the curve y = at the
x+1
point (1, 1).
9. The equation of motion of a particle is s = t3 − 3t, where s is in meters
and t is in seconds. Find
(a) the velocity and acceleration as functions of t,
(b) the acceleration after 2s, and
(c) the acceleration when the velocity is 0.

10. Show that if f is an even function then f 0 is an odd function. [Try a
proof using the limit definition of f 0 (x) and f 0 (−x). Your proof must
work for any even function; it is not good enough to check it for one
even function.]
11. Which of the following statements are true, and which are false? If you
believe that a statement is true, then give a reason. If you believe that
a statement is false, then give an example to show that it is not true.
(a) If f and g are both increasing functions on an interval, then f g is
an increasing function on that interval.
(b) If
lim f (x) = 0
x→a
and g(a) is defined, then
lim f (x)g(x) = 0
x→a
(c) If f is an odd function then f 0 is an even function.
(d) If f is differentiable at a then f 00 (a) exists.
(e) If f is differentiable at a then lim f (x) exists.
x→a
(f) If f is differentiable for all positive x and f 0 (x) → 0 as x → ∞
then f has a horizontal asymptote.
(g) Suppose f is defined on an interval [a, b], and that f (a) > 0 and
f (b) < 0. Then for some c ∈ [a, b], f (c) = 0.
(h) If limx→a f (x) exists and limx→a g(x) does not exist, then limx→a [f (x)g(x)]
does not exist.
(i) If limx→a f (x) does not exist and limx→a g(x) does not exist, then
limx→a [f (x)g(x)] does not exist.
(j) If limx→a f (x) does not exist, then limx→a |f (x)| does not exist.
(k) If f and g are real valued functions and limx→2 [f (x)g(x)] = L
then L = f (2)g(2).
(l) If f 0 (a) is undefined, then f (x) has a vertical tangent at x = a
