Tutorial Questions on Fourier Transform

Definition of rect(t/T):
The rectangular function is defined as:

rect(t/T) = 1, for |t| ≤ T/2

rect(t/T) = 0, otherwise

It represents a pulse of duration T centered at t = 0.

Definition of sinc(t):
The sinc function is a mathematical function widely used in signal processing and Fourier
analysis. It is defined as:

sinc(t) = sin(πt) / (πt), for t ≠ 0

sinc(0) = 1

Alternatively, in some engineering contexts, it is defined without the π term as:

sinc(t) = sin(t) / t, for t ≠ 0

sinc(0) = 1

The version used depends on the convention adopted in the Fourier Transform
formulation.

Tutorial Questions:
1. Find the Fourier Transform of x(t) = e^(-2|t|).

2. Determine the Fourier Transform of x(t) = rect(t/4).

3. Compute the Fourier Transform of x(t) = cos(100πt).

4. If x(t) = e^(-at)u(t) with a > 0, find X(jω).

5. A signal x(t) = sinc(2t) is given. Find its Fourier Transform and sketch its spectrum.

6. Using the time-shifting property, find the Fourier Transform of x(t) = rect((t−2)/4).
7. Using the frequency-shifting property, find the Fourier Transform of x(t) = e^(j4t) ⋅
rect(t/2).

8. If x₁(t) = e^(−t)u(t) and x₂(t) = e^(−2t)u(t), find the Fourier Transform of their
convolution x₁(t) * x₂(t).

9. Find the energy of the signal x(t) = e^(−2|t|) using Parseval’s theorem.

10. For x(t) = cos(5000πt) ⋅ rect(t/0.001): (a) Determine its Fourier Transform. (b) Sketch
the magnitude spectrum. (c) Find the bandwidth.
