1. 1) Derive the equation to explain the relationship between <DP> and P when we have
equivalent amount of reactant functional groups of A and B.
2) Draw a graph to show the relationship between monomer conversion (P) and average
degree of polymerization (<DP>) for step-growth polymerization.
2. 1) Draw the expected repeat unit structure of a polymer product after condensation
reaction of given monomers. Make sure mark the characteristic linkage in a box and name
the polymer type to represent its characteristic linkage.
n(H2N-(CH2)6-NH2) + n(HOOC-(CH2)4-COOH)
2) The initial concentrations of NH2 groups and COOH groups were 0.998 M and 1.0 M,
respectively (i.e., [NH2]0 = 0.998 M, [COOH]0 = 1.0 M). What will be the maximum degree
of polymerization <DPmax> and the maximum number average molecular weight <Mn,max>
that we can achieve?
3. We have nylon 6 synthesized by dehydration of aminocaproic acid as shown below.
(aminocaproic acid can be made from opening caprolactam)
1) What percent conversion of monomer is necessary to produce nylon 6 with a number
average molecular weight of 22.8 kg/mol?
2) Suggest approaches to increase the average molecular weight of nylon 6 synthesized
by dehydration of aminocaproic acid.
