8 TIME &WORK

In solving questions on Time and Work' the following simple facts should be
remembered.
1. If a person can do a work in 8 days. It is evident that in 1day he will do 1/8th of the whole work.
Conversely if a man does 1/8th of the work in lday, he will do the whole work in 8 days.
2. If the number of men engaged to do a piece of work be increased in a certain ratio. The time required
to do the same work will be decreased in the same ratio and vice versa Thus if the number of men be
changed in the ratio of 7: 12 the time required will be changed in the ratio of 12:7.
3
IfA is twice or thrice as good a workman as B, Awill take one-half or one -third of the time taken by B
to do a certain piece of work

Allthe above points can be written in the following way: If Mi persons working H, hours a days can do
Widays works in D, days &M2 persons working H2 Hours a day can do W: works in D. days, thenthe
Formula for above relation to given by M1 Di Hi Wa = M2 D2 H2 Wi

SOLVED EXAMPLES
Ex. 1 If 16 men can do a piece of work in 7 days, in how many days wil1 14 men do it?
Sol. M(men) D(days)

Using,M,D = Ma D2

Using M,D,Wa = MD>W1
30 x 70 x 120 = 50 x Xx 80
30x 70 × 120

Ex. 3 If 24 men can do a piece of work in 24 days working 7 hours a day, in how many days will 42
men finish the same work, working 8 hours a day?
Sol. M D H
24 24 7
42 8
Using M,D,H} = M, D, Ha
24 x 24 x 7= 42 x X x 8
X= 24 × 24 x7-=12 days

Ex. 4 If a number of men can dig a trench 310mn long, 4m wide &3m deep in 7 days of 10 hours each,
Sol.

H
of 7 hours each will they dig a trench 155m long 6mwide &4m deep.
W
7 10 310 x 4 x 3

Using, D, H;W2 = D,H,Wi

IfX can complete the work in Adays &Ycan complete the work in B days then together they

If X and Y working together can do a piece of work in Adays whereas Yalone can do thel

Then, X alone will cómplete the work in -days(B > A) and days(A > B)

IfX can complete the work in Adays &Ycan complete the work in B days &Z can complete

Ex, 5 A can do a piece of work in 8 days & Bin 10 days. How long will A & Btake to do the work
together?
Sol. A's one day work = 1/8
B's one day work = 1/10
5+4 9
(A+B)'s one day= 1/8+ 1/10=
40 40
No. of days taken by A&B together to complete the work = 40/9 days
Or
By using formula given above, we have no. of days taken by A&B to complete the work
8×10
=
= 80/18 = 40/9 days.
8+10

Ex. 6 If X completes a work in 15days and Ycompletes the same work in 10 days, the together they
complete the work in how many days?
15x10 150
Sol. Z =
15+10 25
=6days
Ex. 7 A and B together can do a piece of work in 12 days &% A alone can do it in 16 days. In how
many days B alone do it?
Sol. (A+B)'s one day= 1/12
A's one day work = 1/16
B's one day work =1/12 - 1/16
= 1/48 .:. Balone can complete the work in 48 days.

Ex. 8 Acan do a piece of work in &days, B in 10 days and C in 15 days. All begin the work together,
but A leaves the work after 2 days and B leaves it 2 days before the work is finished. How long
did the work last?

Sol. A's 1day's work =1/8

B's 1 day's work = 1/10
C's 1 day's work= 1/15
For first two days all of them worked together,
:. (A+B+C)'s 2 days work = (1/8+ 1/10+ 1/15) X 2 = 7/12
B leaves 2 days before the work in finished. This means that Cworked alone for 2 days
C's 2 days work =
15 15
7, 2 43
Total work done during the first two and last two days =
12 15 60
Remaining work =143 / 60 = 17 /60
This much work has done by B and C working together.
Now (B+C)'s 1day's work = 1/10 + 1/15 = 1/6
.: Time taken by (B+C) to do 17/60 of the work.

Ex. 9 If8men and 16 boys can finish a work in &days but 20 men and 24 boys can finish it in 4 days.
How many days will 12 men and 24 boys take to finish the same work?
Sol. We shall frst compare the work of the man with that of boy and for that we shall equal the two groups
can finish the work during the same period that is one day.
Strength of group that can fnish the work in 8 days = 8 men + 16 boys
Strength of group that can finish the work in 1 day = 8 (8men + 16 boys )
=64 nen + 128 boys (1)
Strength of group that can finish thework in 4 days = 20men + 24 boys
1day = 4 (20 men + 24 boys)
= 80nmen + 96 boys (2)
Equating (1) & (2)
64M + 128B = 80M + 96B ’32B = 16M 2B = 1 M
.:8M + 16B = 8 x 2B +16B +32 boys
12M + 24B = 12 X 2B + 24B >24 B+ 24B = 48boys
Now question becomes - if 32 boys can finish a work in 8 days,in how many days will 48 boys finish
the same work?
