Arithmetic Sequence - is a list of numbers with a definite pattern. In an arithmetic sequence, the absolute
difference between one term and the next term is constant. This difference is called the COMMON
DIFFERENCE of the sequence. ( adding or subtracting sequence )
To find the common difference. Subtract 2nd term to the 1st term
For example, the sequence 3, 5, 7, 9 ... is arithmetic because the difference between consecutive terms is always
two.
Geometric Sequence - A geometric sequence is a sequence of non-zero numbers where each term after the first is found
by multiplying the previous one by a fixed, non-zero number. This number is called the COMMON RATIO and it
determines the pattern of the sequence. A geometric sequence can have a positive or negative common ratio, but it cannot
be 0. (multiplying or dividing sequence)
For example, the sequence 4, 16, 64, 256 … is geometric because the ratio between consecutive terms is always 2.
To find the common ratio divide 2nd term to the 1st term
Examples
1. Find the 12th term of the sequence 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, …
It is Arithmetic sequence and the common difference is 2.
d = common difference
d = 2nd term minus 1st term
d=4–2
d=2
n = nth term = 12
a1 = first term = 2
Arithmetic Sequence Formula
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
a 12=2+ ( 12−1 ) 2
a 12=2+ ( 11) 2
a 12=2+ 22
a 12=24
2. Find the 15th term of the sequence 1, 4, 16, 64, …
It is Geometric sequence and the common ratio is 4.
r = common ratio
r = 2nd term divided by the 1st term
r=4/1
r=4
n= nth term = 15
a1 = first term = 1
Geometric Sequence Formula
n−1
a n=a1 r
15−1
a 15=1(4 )
14
a 15=1(4 )
a 15=1 ( 268435456 )
a 15=268435456
3. Find the 9th term of the sequence -1, -6, -11, -16, -21, …
It is Arithmetic sequence and the common difference is 1.
d = common difference
d = 2nd term – 1st term
d = -6 – (-1)
d = -6 + 1
d= -5
n = nth term = 9
a1 = -1
Arithmetic Sequence Formula
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
a 9=−1+ ( 9−1 )−5
a 9=−1+ ( 8 )−5
a 9=−1+(−40)
a 9=−41
