Homework 5 (Written Homework 3) Math 256, Spring 2026

Due at midnight Thursday, February 12

Follow the homework guidelines on Canvas. In particular, write up your own work, and, write up
all the steps in your work – solutions with no intermediate steps will receive no credit. Submit your
legible .pdfs on Canvas as per instructions given.

1. For (a)-(c) find the general solution to the following ordinary di!erential equations
(a) 2t2 y →→ + 9ty → + 5y = 0
(b) t2 y →→ + ty → + 36y = 0
(c) t2 y →→ → 3ty → + 4y = 0
(d) Now introduce a forcing term t2 to the ODE in (c) and use the method of reduction
of order and the fact that y1 (t) = t2 is a solution to the ODE in (c) to determine the
general solution.
2. Determine the Laplace transforms of the following functions:

(a) f (t) = t2 sinh t

(b) f (t) = cos3 t
(c) f (t) = cosh t sin t

3. Invert the following Laplace transforms:

s↑5
(a) F (s) = s2 +8s+25
s2 +2s+3
(b) F (s) = (s+1)(s+2)(s+3)
s4
(c) F (s) = (s+1)2 (s+2)(s2 +1)

4. Solve the following initial value problems using Laplace transforms

(a) y →→ + 6y → + 18y = 0, y(0) = 2, y → (0) = 3,

(b) y →→→ → 3y →→ + 3y → → y = t2 et , y(0) = 0, y → (0) = 0, y →→ (0) = 0
(c) y →→ + 4y → + 3y = →6e↑3t , y(0) = 2, y → (0) = →1
(d) y →→ + 4y → + 3y = →e↑3t ω(t → 1), y(0) = 2, y → (0) = →1

5. Consider the following model for a car passing over a ‘speed bump’ at time t = 0:
!
2 k
ÿ + ε0 y = sin [ϑt] → u(t → 1) sin [ϑ(t → 1)] , where ε0 = (1)
m

where y(t) is the vertical displacement of the car from its equilibrium position, which, before
it encounters the bump, is such that y(0) = 0 and ẏ(0) = 0. Since the Laplace transform is
ideal for treating such discontinuous forcing functions, use the Laplace transform to solve the
ODE (1) along with the above initial conditions.
