Example ACI Moment Coefficient Method

The document outlines the design of a two-way edge supported slab for a cyclone shelter, detailing the dimensions, loads, and reinforcement calculations based on ACI code moment coefficients. It includes steps for determining slab thickness, factored loads, moment coefficients, and reinforcement requirements. The calculations ensure that the slab meets structural adequacy and safety standards for the specified live and dead loads.

Design of two-way edge supported slab by using moment coefficients

Beam-column supported floor slab of a 93ꞌ-6ꞌꞌ×75ꞌ-6ꞌꞌ (center to center distance of extreme columns)
“cyclone shelter” is to carry service live load of 40 psf in addition to its own weight, and partition
wall of 50 psf and floor finish of 25psf. Supporting columns of 14 in square are spaced orthogonally
at an interval at 31ꞌ-2ꞌꞌ and 25ꞌ-2ꞌꞌ on centers along longitudinal and transverse directions respectively.
Width of each beam is 14 in. Using ACI code of moment coefficients design the slab by USD method,
Given that, fꞌc= 3000 psi and fy= 60000 psi.

Solution:

Step -1: Approximate thickness of the panel

𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑎𝑛𝑒𝑙 2(31′2" + 25′2")

𝑡𝑠𝑙𝑎𝑏 = = = 7.51" ≈ 8"

Step-2: Calculation of factored load

8
Factored dead load, WDL=1.2* ( *150+25+50) = 210 psf
12

Factored live load, WLL= 1.6*40= 64 psf

Total load, W = WDL + WLL = 274 psf

Step-3: Determination of moment coefficient

Short span (clear distance), la = 25’2” -14” = 24’

Long span (clear distance), lb = 31’2” -14” = 30’

Short span to long span ratio, (la / lb) = 0.80

Step-4: Moment Calculation (considering 1’ strip of slab)

Moment in short direction

+Ma= Ca,DL*WDL*la2 + Ca,LL*WLL*la2 = 0.039*210*242 + 0.048*64*242 = 6486.9 lb-ft/ft = 6.5 k-ft/ft

-Ma = Ca*W * la2 = 0.075*274*242 = 11836.2 lb-ft/ft = 11.8 k-ft/ft

Moment in long direction

+Mb= Cb, DL*WDL*lb2 + Cb,LL*WLL*lb2 = 0.016*210*302 + 0.020*64*302 = 4176 lb-ft/ft = 4.2 k-ft/ft

-Mb= Cb* W *lb2 = 0.041*274*302 = 10110.6 lb-ft/ft = 10.1 k-ft/ft
