Title: “Rotation and Revolution Demonstration”
2|Page
Materials:
Globe
Flashlight (representing the Sun)
Procedure:
1. The teacher holds the flashlight to represent the Sun.

EXPLAIN 2. The teacher also holds the globe and spins it slowly on its axis
to show the rotation of the Earth.

3. While spinning the globe, the teacher moves it around the

flashlight to show the revolution of the Earth around the Sun.

4. The class observes carefully what happens when the globe

spins and when it moves around the flashlight.

DISCUSSION
Definition:
Rotation – Rotation is the turning of the Earth on its own axis.
One complete rotation of the Earth takes 24 hours, and this
causes day and night.

Revolution – Revolution is the movement of the Earth around

the Sun. One complete revolution takes 365 days or one year,
and this causes the different seasons of the yea

Teacher
Class, when the Earth rotates for 24 hours, that’s why we
experience day and night. But when it revolves around the Sun
for 365 days, that’s why we have different seasons in one year
like summer, winter, spring, and autumn.”

Comprehension Questions:
1. What happens when the Earth rotates on its axis?

2. How long does it take for the Earth to complete one rotation?

3. What happens when the Earth revolves around the Sun?

4. How long does it take for the Earth to complete one

revolution?

5. What do we experience because of the Earth’s rotation and

revolution?

1. Generalizations Ask the class:
Class, what have we learned today about the movement of the
Earth?
2. Applications Instruction:
Ask 2–3 volunteers to demonstrate again how the Earth rotates
and revolves using the globe and flashlight.

After the demonstration, let the students share their answers to

these guide questions based on their experience:

1. What did you notice when the globe was spinning on its axis?
2. What happened when the globe moved around the
flashlight?
3. What can you say about the Earth’s two movements?
4. Why do you think these movements are important to us?
3. Valuing A. Why is it important for us to know about the Earth’s
movements?
B. How can understanding day and night help us in our daily
life?
C. What do you feel after learning how the Earth moves around
the Sun?
