1. Title of the Project
Costelia: An In-depth Analysis of Real-world Cloud Resource Costs
2. Abstract
Cloud computing has become the backbone of modern digital infrastructure, offering scalable and
flexible resources to organizations of all sizes. However, the complexity and variation in pricing
models across different cloud service providers make it difficult for users to accurately estimate and
compare operational expenses. This project focuses on addressing the challenge of understanding
and analyzing real-world cloud infrastructure resource costs.
The primary objective of this work is to design and develop an interactive dashboard that enables
users to compare the operational costs of major cloud service providers based on compute, storage,
and networking resources. The system collects real-world pricing data from multiple cloud platforms
and organizes it into a unified and user-friendly interface.
The proposed solution utilizes web technologies, data processing techniques, and visualization tools
to present cost comparisons through charts and analytical insights. By enabling transparent cost
evaluation, the dashboard assists organizations, developers, and decision-makers in selecting the
most cost-effective cloud infrastructure. The expected outcome is improved cost awareness,
optimized cloud resource planning, and reduced operational expenditure.
3. Introduction / Background
Cloud computing has become a fundamental component of modern IT infrastructure, allowing
organizations to deploy applications with high scalability and flexibility while avoiding heavy upfront
hardware investments. Cloud service providers use a pay-as-you-go pricing model to reduce costs
and improve efficiency. However, in real-world scenarios, cloud expenses often grow unpredictably
due to dynamic workloads, complex pricing structures, and improper resource management. As
cloud adoption increases across startups, enterprises, and research institutions, understanding and
controlling cloud resource costs has become a critical challenge.
Several cloud providers offer built-in cost-monitoring and budgeting tools, including cost calculators,
billing dashboards, and usage reports. Additionally, existing research primarily focuses on cloud
performance optimization, workload scheduling, and resource allocation strategies to improve
efficiency. Some studies analyze cloud pricing models theoretically or compare costs across providers
using predefined workloads. While these approaches provide useful insights, they often rely on
simulated environments or limited datasets rather than actual real-world usage patterns.
Despite the availability of cost management tools and prior research, there is a lack of in-depth
analysis based on real-world cloud usage and billing data. Existing solutions do not sufficiently
capture hidden costs, long-term expenditure trends, or the impact of scaling and resource
misconfiguration. This project aims to address this gap by conducting a detailed analysis of real-world
cloud resource costs, identifying key cost drivers, inefficiencies, and practical insights that can help
users make informed and cost-effective cloud deployment decisions.
4. Problem Definition
Cloud service providers offer a wide range of infrastructure resources with complex and varying
pricing models. Due to the lack of a centralized and standardized platform, users face difficulty in
accurately comparing real-world operational costs across different cloud infrastructures. This results
in inefficient cloud resource selection, increased operational expenses, and poor cost optimization
decisions. There is a need for an accessible and reliable system that enables transparent comparison
and analysis of cloud infrastructure resource costs to support informed decision-making.
5. Objectives
The objectives of our project are as follows:
1. To analyze real-world cloud resource usage and associated cost patterns.
2. To identify major cost drivers across different cloud services and pricing models.
3. To compare cloud resource costs under varying workload scenarios.
4. To detect inefficiencies and hidden costs in cloud resource utilization.
5. To provide insights and recommendations for optimizing cloud expenditure.
6. Scope of the Project
The scope of this project is limited to the analysis and comparison of real-world operational costs of
major cloud service providers. The system focuses on core cloud infrastructure resources such as
compute instances, storage services, and networking components. Pricing data is collected from
publicly available sources provided by cloud vendors and presented through an interactive
web-based dashboard.
The project covers cost comparison based on predefined configurations and usage parameters to
help users evaluate and select suitable cloud services. It does not include real-time billing
integration, dynamic usage tracking, or cost optimization recommendations based on live workloads.
The system is intended for analytical and comparative purposes only and does not manage or deploy
cloud resources.
7. Proposed System
The proposed solution is a centralized cloud cost analysis dashboard that aggregates pricing and
usage information from multiple cloud service providers. The system collects cost-related data for
various cloud resources such as compute, storage, and networking services, processes this data, and
presents it in an interactive dashboard. Users can compare costs across different cloud services and
configurations, enabling them to perform a cost–benefit analysis before hosting their applications.
This workflow helps users make informed decisions based on estimated and comparative cloud
expenses.
● Data Collection Module: Gathers pricing and resource details from different cloud service
offerings.
● Cost Analysis Module: Processes and compares costs based on selected services,
configurations, and usage parameters.
● Dashboard & Visualization Module: Displays cost comparisons, trends, and summaries using
charts and tables for easy interpretation.
● User Interaction Module: Allows users to select cloud resources, adjust parameters, and
view customized cost analysis results.
Unlike existing cloud provider tools that focus on a single platform, the proposed system provides a
unified and comparative view of cloud resource costs across multiple services. It emphasizes
real-world cost evaluation rather than isolated pricing estimates, helping users identify the most
cost-effective hosting option. The dashboard simplifies complex pricing models, improves
transparency, and supports better financial planning for cloud deployments.
Optional: Include a block diagram or flowchart for clarity.
