Factors, Mul-ples and Primes

Mul-ples

Mul%ples of a number are just the %metables.

For example: Find the first 8 mul%ples of 13.

13, 26, 39, 52, 65, 78, 91, 104

Ques%ons:

1. Find the first 8 mul%ples of 9.

2. Find the first 8 mul%ples of 17.

3. Find the first 8 mul%ples of 12.

Factors

Factors of a number are all the numbers that divide into it.

For example: Find all the factors of 24.

2 X 12
3 X 8
4 X 6

So, the factors of 24 are 1,2,3,4,6,8,12 and 24.

Ques%ons:

1. Find all the factors of 36.

2. Find all the factors of 100.

3. Find all the factors of 132.

Prime Numbers

A prime number is a number which aren’t divisible by anything apart from 1 and itself.

The only excep%on is 1, which is not a prime number.


Examples of Prime numbers:

2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43 …

Finding Prime Numbers

Example: Express 420 as a product of prime factors.

Ques%ons:

1. Express 360 as a product of prime factors.

2. Express 160 as a product of their prime factors.

3. Express 990 as a product of their prime factors.

LCM (Lowest Common Mul-ple)

The smallest number that will DIVIDE BY ALL the numbers in the ques%on.

Example: Find the LCM of 18 and 30.

LCM is 90.

Ques%ons:

1. Find the LCM of 9 and 12.

2. Find the LCM of 8 and 28.


3. Find the LCM of 12 and 15.

HCF (Highest Common Factor)

The biggest number that will divide into ALL the numbers in the ques%on.

Example: Find the HCF of 180 and 84.

So, the HCF of 84 and 180 is 12.
