1. What are Question Words?

Question words are interrogative words in English that are used to


request specific information. They are usually placed at the beginning of an interrogative sentence.

2. Types of Question Words + Explanations & Examples

1. What : Used to ask about objects, ideas, or activities.

Example:

- What is your name?


- What are you doing now?

2. Who : Used to ask about people.

Example:

- Who is your best friend?


- Who called you last night?

3. Whom : Used to ask about people as objects (more formal).

Example:

-Whom did you meet yesterday?

👉 In everyday conversation, it is often replaced by who.

4. Whose : Used to ask about ownership.

Example:

- Whose bag is this?


- Whose house are we visiting?

5. Where : Used to ask about place/location.

Example:

-Where do you live?


- Where is the classroom?

6. When : Used to ask about time.

Example:

-When is your birthday?

-When did the class start?


7. Why : Used to ask about reasons.

Example:

-Why are you late?

- Why did she cry?

8. Which : Used to choose one or more from a limited selection or choice.

Example:

-Which color do you like?

- Which one is yours?

9. How : Used to ask about manner or conditions.

Example:

-How are you today?

- How do you make this cake?
