Moderation Script: The Dilemma of Truth and Harmony
Discussion Theme: Relationships, ethics, communication, trust, con ict
1. Welcome & Framing (3–5 minutes)
Moderator Opening:
Hello everyone! Thank you for joining this conversation. Today’s dilemma strikes at the
very foundation of how we connect with one another.
We’ll be exploring a tension we all face: the choice between being completely honest and
preserving peace in our relationships.
Here’s the central question we’ll sit with today:
Is truth more important than harmony in human relationships?
Truth builds trust — it’s what makes bonds real and lasting. But harmony keeps peace,
avoids con ict, and helps relationships survive. When these two collide, which one should
we choose?
As we discuss, I encourage you to lean into the discomfort. There are no easy answers
here. Listen with curiosity, speak from your experience, and respect the different
perspectives in the room.
2. Warm-Up Activity: Either/Or (5–7 minutes)
Prompt:
Let's start with a quick personal scenario to get us thinking.
Would you rather:
• A friend tells you a harsh truth that hurts your feelings but is honest?
• Or a friend tells you a kind lie to protect your feelings and keep the peace?
•
Ask for 2–3 brief responses:
• Why did you choose the option you did?
• What feels more like "care" to you: honesty or protection?
Follow-up:
Is it possible for a relationship to be too harmonious? Or too honest?
3. Context Setting (2–3 minutes)
Moderator shares examples:
This isn't just a philosophical idea; it shows up in our lives every day:

• A manager must give critical feedback to an employee. Does blunt honesty
motivate, or does it shatter con dence and team harmony?
• A family avoids discussing a past con ict to keep the peace at Thanksgiving dinner.
Does this harmony strengthen the family or create a fragile, unspoken tension?
• On social media, we often silence our true opinions to avoid backlash. Is this a
necessary social grace or a slow erosion of authentic discourse?
This dilemma is all around us.
4. Core Discussion (30–35 minutes)
Part 1: The Personal Level (10 minutes)
Prompt:
Let's start close to home. Think about your closest relationships.
Can you recall a time when you chose truth over harmony, or harmony over truth? What
was the outcome?
Follow-up Questions:
• Do "white lies" serve a important purpose in maintaining daily peace, or do they
always damage trust in the long run?
• Is there a difference between privacy (keeping something to yourself) and
dishonesty (actively hiding the truth)?
• When is protecting someone actually patronizing them?
Part 2: The Relational Level (10–12 minutes)
Prompt:
Now let's zoom out to our communities, workplaces, and society.
Imagine a leader who always prioritizes blunt, un ltered truth. Another leader who always
prioritizes group harmony and consensus.
Which environment is healthier? Which is more productive? Which is more sustainable?
Follow-up Questions:
• Can a team that never con icts truly innovate?
• Does a community that avoids dif cult conversations lack authenticity?
• Is "harmony" sometimes just another word for avoiding necessary con ict?
Part 3: The Digital Age (10–12 minutes)
Prompt:
Let's bring this into our modern context of digital communication.
Discussion Questions:
• Online, is "cancel culture" a demand for radical truth and accountability, or does it
destroy nuance and harmony?

• Do algorithms that show us only what we want to see (creating a harmonious
bubble) harm our ability to engage with truthful but challenging ideas?
• Are we, as a society, currently valuing harmony over truth? What are the
consequences of that?
5. Closing Re ection (5–7 minutes)
Moderator Synthesis:
We've wrestled with a fundamental tension today. We've seen that truth without harmony
can be brutal, and harmony without truth can be fragile.
Perhaps the answer isn't about choosing one over the other, but about learning the
wisdom to navigate the space between them—knowing when to speak with courage and
when to listen with grace.
Final Round Question:
What’s one relationship in your life where you feel this balance is most important,
and what have you learned from it?
