5. On a morning walk, three persons step off together and their steps measure 40cm,
30cm and 36cm respectively. What is the minimum distance each should walk so that
each can cover the same distance in complete steps?
6. Prove that √5 and √2 are irrational numbers.

of k.

41. The shadow of a tower standing on level ground is found to be 40 m longer when the
Sun’s altitude is 30° than when it is 60°. Find the height of the tower.

42. A tree breaks due to a storm and the broken part bends so that the top of the tree
touches the ground making an angle of 30° with it. The distance between the foot of
the tree to the point where the top touches the ground is 8 m. Find the height of the
tree.

43. Two poles of equal heights are standing opposite each other on either side of the
road, which is 80 m wide. From a point between them on the road, the angles of
elevation of the top of the poles are 60° and 30°, respectively. Find the height of the
poles and the distances of the point from the poles.
44. The angle of elevation of the top of a tower from a certain point is 30°. If the
observer moves 20 metres towards the tower, the angle of elevation of the top
increases by 15°. Find the height of the tower

45. A circus artist is climbing a 20 m long rope, which is tightly stretched and tied from
the top of a vertical pole to the ground. Find the height of the pole, if the angle made
by the rope with the ground level is 30°

Chapter: Areas Related to Circles

60. A chord subtends an angle of 90°at the centre of a circle whose radius is 20 cm.

cm and ∠ AOB = 120°. (Use π = 22/7).

66. A round table cover has six equal designs as shown in the figure. If the radius of the
cover is 28 cm, find the cost of making the designs at the rate of Rs. 0.35 per cm2.

67. In the figure, O is the centre of a circle such that diameter AB = 13 cm and AC = 12
cm. BC is joined. Find the area of the shaded region. (take π = 3.14)
Chapter: Surface Areas and Volumes

68. Mayank made a bird-bath for his garden in the shape of a cylinder with a
hemispherical depression at one end, as shown in the figure. The height of the
cylinder is 1.45 m, and its radius is 30 cm. Find the total surface area of the bird-bath.
(Take π = 22/7)

69. 2 cubes each of volume 64 cm3 are joined end to end. Find the surface area of the
resulting cuboid.

70. A tent is in the shape of a cylinder surmounted by a conical top. If the height and
diameter of the cylindrical part are 2.1 m and 4 m respectively, and the slant height of
the top is 2.8 m, find the area of the canvas used for making the tent. Also, find the
cost of the canvas of the tent at the rate of Rs. 500 per m2. (Note that the base of the
tent will not be covered with canvas.)

71. A solid toy is in the form of a hemisphere surmounted by a right circular cone. The
height of the cone is 2 cm, and the diameter of the base is 4 cm. Determine the
volume of the toy. If a right circular cylinder circumscribes the toy, find the
difference between the volumes of the cylinder and the toy. (Take π = 3.14)

72. A spherical glass vessel has a cylindrical neck 8 cm long, 2 cm in diameter; the
diameter of the spherical part is 8.5 cm. By measuring the amount of water it holds, a
child finds its volume to be 345 cm3. Check whether she is correct, taking the above
as the inside measurements, and π = 3.14.
73. Selvi’s house has an overhead tank in the shape of a cylinder. This is filled by
pumping water from a sump (an underground tank) which is in the shape of a cuboid.
The sump has dimensions 1.57 m × 1.44 m × 95cm. The overhead tank has a radius
of 60 cm and a height of 95 cm. Find the height of the water left in the sump after the
overhead tank has been completely filled with water from the sump which had been
full. Compare the capacity of the tank with that of the sump. (Use π = 3.14)

74. A cubical ice-cream brick of edge 22 cm is to be distributed among some children by


filling ice-cream cones of radius 2 cm and height 7 cm up to its brim. How many
children will get the ice cream cones?

75. Find the mean of the first 10 natural numbers.

76. While checking the value of 20 observations, it was noted that 125 was wrongly
noted as 25 while calculating the mean and then the mean was 60. Find the correct
mean.
