STUDENT TEACHER: Dağkan Özbalıkçı
CLASS TEACHER: Fatoş EROZAN
SUPERVISOR: Fatoş EROZAN
DATE: December 16, 2025
SCHOOL: Eastern Mediterranean University
CLASS: Students at High School (B1)
CLASS SIZE: 30 (18 men / 12 women)
AGE: 16 - 17
TIME: 40 Minutes
PERIOD: 9:30 – 10:10
LEVEL: Intermediate (B1)
TEACHING POINT: Learning about “vocabulary” through a reading passage about
technology.
AIMS:
To equip students with ten B1-level words essential for describing and evaluating
technological trends and usage.
To foster critical thinking skills by enabling students to analyze the benefits and
ethical challenges (like privacy) presented in the reading passage.
To enhance students' confidence in discussing their own digital habits and
preferences using the new target vocabulary in conversational settings.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to distinguish between the meanings
of closely related technology words (e.g., innovation vs. device) and use them
accurately in gap-fill exercises.
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to construct sentences expressing
opinions or predictions about future technology, correctly incorporating the
target vocabulary.
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to write a short, coherent paragraph
(the production task) arguing for or against a specific digital trend using a
minimum of five of the target words.
PERSONAL AIM(S): Encourage all students to actively participate in the lesson by
asking questions, providing opportunities for discussion, and eliciting responses from each
student.
TARGET LANGUAGE AREAS/SKILLS: English Language with vocabulary, reading,
speaking, and writing.
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE: Students are assumed to know basic vocabulary and
grammar.
MATERIALS:
PowerPoint slide
Reading passage
Worksheets
Whiteboard
ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS:
Students may not feel confident in their capacity to respond when needed
(especially with more abstract concepts like 'privacy' or 'innovation').
The subject matter, though relevant, may not attract all students' interest equally.
It may be difficult for students to recognize or comprehend exactly what is required
for the production task (using 5 new words in a paragraph).
SOLUTION(S):
Establishing a classroom atmosphere that is both encouraging and welcoming,
allows students to express their opinions without worrying about being judged.
Choosing topics that are relevant and engaging to students' lives and interests
(e.g., social media, smartphones).
Using clear examples and models to illustrate the rules and demonstrate their
application.
PROCEDURES/STAGES:
WARM-UP / LEAD-IN (5 minutes)
1. Display images related to common modern technology (smartphones, laptops,
apps, etc.) and ask questions like:
- "What devices do you see here?"
2. Engage students in a brief discussion about:
- "How does technology make your daily life easier?"
- "What is the most important app on your phone?"
- "How often do you use the internet to look up information?"
3. Encourage the use of any relevant words they may be familiar with.
PRE - ---- / PRESENTATION (15 minutes)
1) Distribute the reading passage including all ten target words (innovation, device,
interface, access, digital, browse, privacy, upload, interact, reliable).
- "Today, we'll be reading a passage about technology that includes ten-target words."
2) Have students read the passage with their pairs and guess the meanings of the
underlined words from the context.
- "Please pay close attention to the underlined words and try to guess their meanings
from the context."
3) Have students share the meanings they guessed from the context of the passage.
- "I’d like some volunteers to share the meanings they guessed for the underlined
words."
4) Display the PowerPoint slide to introduce the ten target words one by one.
- "Now, I’ll go through a PowerPoint presentation to introduce each of the ten target
words. Pay attention to the meanings, pronunciation, and examples on each slide."
5) Explain the meanings, and pronunciation, and provide example sentences/visuals
to aid understanding via slides.
WHILE - PRACTICING / PRACTICE (15 minutes)
1. Provide worksheets with matching (Words to Definitions) and fill-in-blank
exercises involving the ten target words.
2. Explain Parts A and B on the given worksheet and have one student explain
the instructions again to check the understanding of students.
- "In Part A you will match the words with their appropriate meanings."
- "In Part B you will write the correct word in the blank space to complete each
sentence."
3. Students will work in pairs to complete the exercises on the worksheet.
- "You will work in pairs to complete the exercises on the worksheet."
4. Provide assistance and support as needed.
- "If you need help, let me know."
5. Review the answers together as a class and address any questions or
misconceptions.
- "We’ll check the answers together as a class."
POST - READING / PRODUCTION (10 minutes)
1. Ask students to create a paragraph (Part C on the worksheet) using at least
five of the vocabulary words from the list.
- "Now it’s time for Part C on the worksheet, please turn the page."
- "I want you to create a short paragraph about the future of technology by using at
least 5 of the new words."
2. Encourage creativity and the use of contextually appropriate paragraphs.
3. Monitor the students’ progress and provide feedback on their work.
4. Have some students share their paragraphs with the class.
- "I’d like a few volunteers to share their paragraph with the class."
CLOSURE: (5 minutes)
1. Summarize the lesson by briefly reviewing the ten new words and their
meanings.
- "Today we learned about ten different words related to technology such as digital,
upload, and reliable."
2. Ask students to share one thing they learned or found interesting about the
vocabulary or the reading passage.
3. Congratulate the students on their hard work and improvement.
- "I hope you found the activity helpful in expanding your vocabulary. Thank you for
your contributions!"
HOMEWORK:
- Assign a task where students have to write a short essay (350-400 words) about the
topic "The Impact of Technology on Daily Life" by using the ten words that they
learned in the lesson.
CONTINGENCY PLAN & TIME-FILLER(S):
If there is extra time available, as a backup plan:
- Conduct a "Find Someone Who" activity where students use the new vocabulary to
interview classmates (e.g., "Find someone who thinks their phone is a reliable
device.").
- Engage students in a discussion about a controversial topic in technology (e.g., AI
or data privacy), using the vocabulary words to describe its implications or
significance.
