QUESTION:

Outline the dynamics of effective administration of the school in the context of the school culture
and ethos.
1
Effective administration plays a crucial role in shaping the culture and ethos of a school. Both
school culture and ethos are essential components of a successful educational institution, as they
influence student learning outcomes, teacher satisfaction, and overall school performance. A
positive school culture and ethos can have a profound impact on students’ academic performance,
social development, and overall well-being. It is the foundation upon which a school is built,
shaping the experiences of both students and educators alike. By cultivating a positive environment,
schools can create a nurturing and supportive atmosphere that empowers students to succeed both in
and out of the classroom. This paper, will outline the dynamics of effective administration of the
school in the context of the school culture and ethos.

According to Peretomode (2004) administration is a set of activities which can be classified as

concerned with the process of planning, organizing, controlling, directing and staffing. All these are
towards the achievement of the goals and objectives of the organization as the product of effective
administration. Also, management is a way of guiding, leading and controlling the efforts of a
group of people towards the realization of their common goals and objectives. Hence, in this
context administration is the use of materials and non-materials resources in an organization to
achieve stated goals. A school is an organized place with rules and regulation guiding the activities
of what is going on in order to achieve the desired goals of education in the process of effective
administration.

The role of school administration and management in shaping the future of education cannot be
overstated. Ezeocha (2002) posits that, it is the backbone that supports the academic and non-
academic activities of an institution. School administration is a multifaceted role that requires a
balance of various elements. It is a task that demands a keen understanding of the educational
landscape, coupled with a strategic approach to decision-making.

Khanal et al., (2020) assert that, one of the most crucial factors that influence the success of any
school is the quality of its leadership. School leaders have the responsibility and the opportunity to
shape the culture and ethos of their schools. The culture of a school refers to the shared values,
beliefs, norms, and expectations that guide the behaviour and interactions of the school community
while school ethos refers to the overall atmosphere and character of the school. A positive school
culture and ethos can enhance student learning, teacher satisfaction, parent involvement, and school

2
reputation. A negative school culture and ethos can lead to low academic achievement, lower
teacher turnover, poor parent communication, and school violence.

Effective administration of the school entail the establishment of a clear and shared vision and
mission for the school. Patterson (2010) contends that, a vision is a statement of the desired future
state of the school, while a mission is a statement of the purpose and goals of the school. A clear
and shared vision and mission can help align the school community around a common direction and
identity, and provide a basis for decision-making and evaluation. School leaders can involve
teachers, students, parents, and other stakeholders in developing and communicating the vision and
mission of the school, and ensure that they are reflected in the school policies, practices, and
activities.

Promoting a culture of trust and respect among the school community is another effective
administration trait. Peterson (2002) highlights that, trust and respect are essential for building
positive relationships and collaboration among the school community. School leaders can promote
a culture of trust and respect by modeling and expecting honesty, integrity, fairness, and
professionalism in their own behaviour and interactions, and by recognizing and appreciating the
contributions and achievements of others. School leaders can also create opportunities for the
school community to interact and communicate in meaningful and constructive ways, such as
through staff meetings, team-building activities, student councils, parent-teacher conferences, and
social events.

Effective administrations encouraging a culture of learning and innovation among the school
community. Learning and innovation are key for enhancing the quality and relevance of education
in a changing world. According to Leithwood et al., (2004), school leaders can encourage a culture
of learning and innovation by fostering a growth mindset and a sense of curiosity and inquiry
among the school community, and by providing and supporting opportunities for professional
development, curriculum improvement, instructional differentiation, and creative problem-solving.
School leaders can also create a safe and supportive environment for the school community to take
risks, experiment, and learn from failures and successes.

Effective administrations also support a culture of diversity and inclusion among the school
community. Deal and Peterson (2009) stress that, diversity and inclusion are important for
respecting and celebrating the differences and similarities among the school community, and for

3
ensuring that every member of the school community feels valued, respected, and empowered.
School leaders can support a culture of diversity and inclusion by embracing and promoting the
diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, experiences, and talents of the school community, and by
ensuring that the school policies, practices, and activities are equitable, accessible, and responsive
to the needs and interests of the school community. School leaders can also facilitate and participate
in dialogues and initiatives that address and challenge issues of bias, discrimination, and injustice in
the school and society.

Another key aspects of effective school administration is clear communication. Miller (2018) states
that administrators must ensure that they articulate their vision and goals to all stakeholders,
including teachers, students, and parents. This clarity of purpose helps in aligning everyone's efforts
towards a common objective. Further, Miller (2018) highlights another crucial element in effective
administration as ability to make informed decisions. School administrators are often faced with
complex issues that require a deep understanding of the educational system and its dynamics. They
must be able to analyze situations, weigh the pros and cons, and make decisions that are in the best
interest of the students and the institution.

To ensure effective school administration and management as posited by Lucas and Valentine
(2002), certain strategies can be employed. These strategies are designed to enhance the efficiency
and effectiveness of the school's operations and to create a conducive learning environment. One
such strategy is the use of technology. Technology can be a powerful tool for improving the
efficiency of school administration and management. It can be used for tasks such as scheduling,
communication, record keeping, and data analysis. By automating these tasks, administrators and
managers can save time and focus on more strategic aspects of their roles. Another strategy is the
promotion of professional development. Administrators and managers should encourage teachers
and other staff to continually improve their skills and knowledge. This can be achieved through
training programs, workshops, and other professional development opportunities. Another strategy
is the involvement of parents and the community. Schools do not operate in isolation, and the
involvement of parents and the community can greatly enhance the school's effectiveness. This can
be achieved through regular communication, parent-teacher meetings, and community events.

In conclusion, effective school administration is a complex and challenging field. It requires a

balance of various skills, including communication, decision-making, and leadership. Effective

4
school administration and management can have a profound impact on the quality of education and
the overall success of a school. By employing effective strategies, embracing new technologies, and
continually striving for improvement, administrators and managers can create schools that are not
just places of learning, but also communities that nurture the holistic development of every student.
