Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION

The importance of the English language in career advancement is undeniable in this era
of globalization. Although proficiency in English is not the sole criterion for professional
growth, its importance in the corporate world is widely recognized. This is particularly
evident in countries like India, where lack of English language skills affects the career
prospects of many young graduates. Today numerous research reports highlight the
relationship between English and employability all over the world. In a globalized
economy, employees need to have day-to-day business dealings and communication with
executives from different parts of the world.

1.1 Background

Vietnam is currently taking significant steps in international relationships and students

play an important role in the mission of international integration. The majority of English
language students aim to work at multinational companies where they can demonstrate
their English proficiency and high productivity, and receive the benefits offered by these
companies. Undeniably, the benefits of multinational companies have superiority over the
domestic enterprise. In order to achieve this, students need to attain a high English
proficiency to increase their employability and gain a competitive edge over other
candidates. Furthermore, strong foreign language communication skills are a part that
gives a boost to career growth and contributes to self-development. Moreover, substantial
financial benefits will come to students who have the opportunity to work at
multinational companies. While the benefits are remarkable, the challenges for working
opportunities are also numerous. Language and communication remain barriers for
students, including English Language students. Many students feel timid, shy, and even
anxious when communicating with foreigners despite being academically proficient. To
enhance employability and work at Multinational Companies, students need to conquer
challenges. Firstly, students should participate in language training programs to improve
their business communication skills and chance to practice with others. Moreover, while
still studying at the university, students try to seek work experience at domestic
companies with similar positions. This can increase competitive advantages compared
with other candidates and when internship opportunities are given, they will be better
prepared, improving their chances of being accepted.

1.2 Literature Review

The research of Xun Yan is the pivotal direction for my methodology research because it
gives weight arguments about the benefits and fully specific evidence with high
convincing. The research has the benefits of high proficiency and opportunities to work at
Multinational Companies for students. This situation largely applies across Asian
societies, where it is common practice for employers to require proof of English
proficiency and conduct part of the job interview, if not the entirety, in English,
especially in commercial sectors (Xun Yan, 2024). Elementals have made me choose the
research to become pieces of evidence for my research. Another author is A. Clement, his
research has statistics from many countries in the world. Statistical research is very
helpful for me because it makes readers feel certain and trust the research. Global
Analysis of Language Skills in the Workplace survey results reveal that English language
skills are important for over 95% of employers in many non-native English-speaking
countries (Clement,2018). There are two authors that I love and utilize too much in my
research. There are two authors that I love and utilize too much in my research.

1.3 Scopes

Many studies have highlighted the benefits of working for a multinational company.
However, the studies are usually conducted on foreign students or working people.
Therefore, the focus of this study is on students at HUFLIT. This study will be conducted
on about 250 third-year students at HUFLIT.

1.4 Objectives

The study was conducted to provide readers with an understanding of the importance of
English, along with statistical data, illustrations, and challenges associated with
employment opportunities in multinational companies. Furthermore, the study identified
the specific benefits of English proficiency for HUFLIT students, as well as the
challenges and solutions for them. Therefore, this study will answer two questions:

1. What is the importance of being good at English for job opportunities at

Multinational Companies?
2. What are the challenges for students at HUFLIT at Multinational Companies?
3. What are the solutions for students at HUFLIT?
