TOPIC # 2: RATIONALE FOR CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT STUDIES


Lesson Outcomes
By the end of this week the student should have:
1. Explained the rationale for curriculum development.
2. Appreciated of the importance of curriculum development studies in
teacher training programs.
Curriculum development involves the interpersonal dynamics of decision making. The process of
curriculum development involves producing a design, a plan of instruction. It includes planning,
implementation and evaluation. Curriculum developers determine how curriculum construction
will proceed. Curriculum development is the process of decision making about what is to be
taught, how learning is to be organized, resources for learning and teaching etc.

Curriculum development is an on-going process. Changes in society and advancements in


different fields in the world mandate curriculum changes. Some issues that necessitate
curriculum development among many include:

 Emerging ideologies of modernism and post modernism.


 Formulation of new theories.
 New understanding of cognitive theories.
 New understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the brain.
 Technological advancement and formulations of instructional design.
 Curriculum deals with issues that relate to society and its development. Sociological
reasons necessitate the study and investigation of curriculum.
 Knowledge explosion is a historical fact which requires educators to evaluate curriculum
and make decisions on what needs to be taught.

Class discussion: What is the importance of curriculum development studies in teacher training
programs?
 Teachers are curriculum implementers.
 Teachers are participants in curriculum development.
 Teachers are curriculum evaluators.
 Curriculum studies equip teachers with hands-on skills for developing a curriculum
including setting goals, methodologies of curriculum planning and implementation and
evaluation.
