Should students have the freedom to decide what they study in school?

Choosing subjects can shape a student’s future, and people have different opinions about
whether this choice should be given to students.

Arguments For
Students become more motivated and interested when they study subjects they enjoy. This can
improve their performance and confidence.
Choosing subjects helps students plan their future careers early and develop independence in
decision-making.
Example: If students have an interest in learning numbers, they would do well in occupations
like finance, commerce, marketing, etc. Hence, the student will choose subjects like
mathematics, business studies, Economics, etc.

Arguments Against

Students may not be mature enough to make the right decisions and might choose only easy
subjects.

Important core subjects like Mathematics and Science could be ignored, which may limit future
career opportunities.
Example: Explaining the above given example, where a student chooses mathematics. Later if
the student realizes that it's not of his interest anymore, it can hamper his base knowledge of
subjects like science.

Conclusion: Although allowing students to choose subjects can increase motivation, guidance
from schools is necessary. A balanced approach, where core subjects remain compulsory and
optional subjects can be chosen, may be the best solution.
