GOSPEL REFLECTION
John 1;1-18. “He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things
were made; without him nothing was made that has been”.

Jesus said to his disciples: The kingdom of heaven is like a

treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again,
and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine

pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all
that he has and buys it.

SOME THOUGHTS ON TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

1. It is true that the Kingdom of God is offered to all — it is a gift, it is a present,
it is a grace — but it does not come on a silver platter: it requires dynamism;
it is about searching, journeying, working hard. What is your attitude in
searching and finding your precious pearl in life?
2. The heart must burn with the desire to reach the valuable good, that is,
the Kingdom of God which is made present in the person of Jesus. He is
the hidden treasure; he is the pearl of great value.

THE FATHER IS REVEALED BY THE SON

Jesus revealed that God is Father in an unheard-of sense: he is Father not only in being
Creator; he is eternally Father about his only Son, who is eternally Son only in relation to his
Father: "No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the
Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."

For this reason, the apostles confess Jesus to be the Word: "In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God"; as "the image of the invisible God"; as
the "radiance of the glory of God and the very stamp of his nature".

GOD HAS WILLED TO REVEAL HIMSELF AND GIVE HIMSELF TO MAN

Jesus is God's final word, the end of divine Revelation. There will never be a new public
revelation until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again at the end of time. Yet it remains for
Christians to gradually grasp its full significance over the centuries. We have seen how a man
can know God with certainty through natural reason. However, there is another order of
knowledge, the order of divine Revelation. In this article, we will take a look at God's Revelation
to us.

God has willed to reveal himself and give himself to man. According to the Catechism of the
Catholic Church (CCC), the purpose of this utterly free act of loving goodness toward man is
as follows:

"God, who 'dwells in unapproachable light,' wants to communicate his own divine life to the
men he freely created, to adopt them as his sons in his only-begotten Son. By revealing himself
God wishes to make them capable of responding to him, and of knowing him, and of loving
him far beyond their natural capacity" (CCC #52).

God communicates his plan of Revelation to man gradually over time. He reveals himself in
stages through his words and his deeds. These stages began with our first parents, Adam and
Eve, and end with "the person and mission of the incarnate Word, Jesus Christ" (CCC #53).

THE STAGES OF REVELATION

 In the first stage of Revelation, God revealed himself as a God of relationship. However,
our FIRST PARENTS broke the covenant; thereby, severing intimate communion with
God. In response, he promised to redeem the human race. Thus began the drama of

 salvation history and God's plan to reveal himself to man and gather together his
wayward children in carefully orchestrated stages.

 The Catechism points out two events that characterize the second stage of Revelation:
THE FLOOD AND THE TOWER OF BABEL. In the story of the flood, we see that man has
continued on his path of rebellion against God and shattered the unity of humanity by
sin.

"When God saw how corrupt the earth had become, . . . God said to Noah, . . . I am
going to destroy them with the earth" (Gen 6:12-13). Then he told Noah to build the
ark and populate it with two of every kind of creature in preparation for a great flood.
After the flood, God established a covenant with Noah and instructed him to repopulate
the earth and to live righteously. It was a new beginning.

In the story of the tower of Babel, we find men forming a false and sinful union: They
said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky, and so
make a name for ourselves" (Gen 11:4).

This stage of Revelation shows God's plan to group families of men in their lands with
their languages. God used Noah's family to begin gathering men together and bring
them back to him. Yet, by this grouping, God both united men into nations and divided
them. "This state of division into many nations . . . is intended to limit the pride of fallen
humanity, united only in its perverse ambition to forge its unity as at Babel" (CCC #57).

 The third stage of Revelation centers around ABRAHAM AND THE TIME OF THE
PATRIARCHS. Through Abraham, God planned to gather together scattered humanity.
God promised to make of him a great nation, to make his name great, and bless all
the world through him (Gen 12--22). Abraham's descendants -- the chosen people, the
root onto which the Gentiles would later be grafted--became the trustees of God's
promises.

But they inherited more than promises. They also inherited new insight into the nature
of God. God revealed to the patriarchs of Israel that he was not tied to the land and its
inhabitants, but that he was the God of all men, and that he was a personal God.
However, God did not reveal his name to them.

 During the fourth stage of Revelation, God began to form his people, Israel. He did this
by freeing them from slavery in Egypt and establishing a new covenant with them
through MOSES AT MOUNT SINAI, and by giving them greater insight into his name and
his nature.

According to the story of the burning bush, Moses asked God what his name was, and
God answered, "I am who I am," and then he added, "I AM" (Ex 3:14). By giving Moses
some insight into his name, God indicated that he was more than a personal God. He
was being itself, but not just being, personal being, and he wanted to enter into a
relationship with a man. Knowing another's name facilitates relationships.

 Furthermore, he was to be the only God for the people of Israel. He said, "You shall not
have other gods beside me" (Ex 20:3). But they still did not understand that there was
only one true God. That understanding came later and is evidenced in Deuteronomy:
"See now that I, I alone, am he, and there is no god besides me" (32:39).

The people of Israel were the first to hear the word of God. By giving them the law, God
revealed himself to them as the one true living God among a multitude of false gods,
and he made them a priestly people. God prepared them to look for the promised
Savior. Through them, he prepared the way for the Gospel.

 The fifth stage of Revelation through ISRAEL'S PROPHETS, God prepared them to hope
for salvation and a new, everlasting covenant intended for all men and all nations. The
prophets proclaimed redemption, purification from sin, and salvation. The prophet
Jeremiah beautifully sums up these proclamations:

"See, days are coming when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and
the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors the day
I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt. They broke my covenant,
though I was their master. But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel
after those days. I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will
be their God, and they shall be my people" (Jer. 31:31-33).

In all the other stages of Revelation, God spoke to mankind in parts. In the last and final stage
of Revelation, Saint John of the Cross tells us, "In giving us his Son, his only Word, (for he
possesses no other), he spoke everything to us at once . . . and he has no more to say" (CCC
#65).

We also learn that "God's very being is love. By sending his only Son and the Spirit of Love in
the fullness of time, God has revealed his innermost secret: God himself is an eternal
exchange of love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and he has destined us to share in that
exchange" (CCC #221).

Jesus also instituted the new and definitive covenant between God and man when he said,
"Take and eat; this is my body," and when he took the cup saying, "Drink from it, all of you, for
this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of
sins" (Mt 26:26-28).

Consequently, every time God comes to us in the Eucharist and we receive him worthily, we
can once again rest with God and enter into intimate communion with him. But unlike our first
parents, we enter into communion with God as his adopted sons and daughters in Christ.

THE LIFE OF CHRIST IS GOD'S FINAL WORD AND DEED, THE END OF DIVINE REVELATION.
THERE WILL NEVER BE A NEW PUBLIC REVELATION UNTIL OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST COMES
AGAIN AT THE END OF TIME.

However, the Catechism says, "Yet even if Revelation is already complete, it has not been
made completely explicit: it remains for Christian faith gradually to grasp its full significance
over the centuries" (CCC#66).

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can
we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the
life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me,

THE EMMANUEL: THE MYSTERY OF INCARNATION

“In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets;
in these last days, he spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through
whom he created the universe, who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being,
and who sustains all things by his mighty word. When he had accomplished purification from
sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” (Hebrews 1:1-3).

COMMENTARY
 How did God communicate in the past? He does this in fragmentary and in various ways.
These final days, He communicates through/by his Son.
 How is this Son different from the other “ways” or “means” God used to communicate?
The Son is the reflection of the Father’s Glory (holiness/divinity) and the exact
representation of the Father’s being (God).

“If you know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have
seen him.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus
answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time?
Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t
you believe that I am in the Father and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do
not speak on my authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.” (John
14:7-10).

COMMENTARY
 Who is known/seen if we knew/saw Jesus? It is the Father.
 Who lives in Jesus accomplishing his work and communicating/speaking to us? it is the
Father.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His Only Son so that everyone who believes in him
might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to
condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:16-17).

COMMENTARY
 Why did God the Father send his Son to the world? God did this out of love
(kagandahang-loob) so, not to condemn the world, but save through him.
 How should we relate to Jesus for us to be saved? We just believe in him (by following
him).
 What will happen to those who will believe in him? They will not die/perish and will have
eternal life, the fullness of life as the final goal of God’s self- revelation.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the
Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of
the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1,14).

COMMENTARY
 Who was in the beginning with God? It is the Word.
 What was the condition/nature of the Word who was with God? It was also God.
 What happened to the Word? It became flesh.
 Where is the Word as it became flesh? It dwells among us.

She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus because he will save his people from their
sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Behold, the
virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means
“God is with us.” (Matthew 1:21-23).

COMMENTARY
 Who gave a name to the son of Mary? It was God (through the angel).
 What was the name given? Jesus (from Hebrew Yeshua or God saves).
 How shall the son of the virgin be called as God willed through the prophet (Isaiah
7:14)? Emmanuel, which means, “God with us”.

THE FIVE BIBLICAL PASSAGES INFORM US THAT God the Father reveals himself and his will
definitively and most fully through Jesus, his Son. As the Son, Jesus is the reflection of the
Father’s glory, his Divinity/Holiness. Thus, Jesus is equally divine with the Father. As the Son,
Jesus is the exact representation of the Father’s being: God. Thus, Jesus is equally God with
the Father. Thus, Jesus is the PERSONAL REVEALER of God: knowing/seeing Jesus is
knowing/seeing God.

Jesus is sent because He is the promised Messiah/Savior who will crush the Devil’s/serpent’s
head. Therefore, in Jesus, we have the fullness of life. Jesus was with God in the beginning,
Jesus is also God. Jesus is a “God becoming man” (Mystery of Incarnation). Jesus is God who
lives among us, sharing our condition, the “God with us” or the Immanuel! Jesus’ name reveals
who he is: “God Saves” Jesus’ title “Emmanuel” reveals who he is: “God with us”. Lastly, Jesus
is the savior because in him is the fullness of God in human form.

The Christian message of these Biblical passages challenge/transform us to know more about
Jesus:
 to know him is knowing God;
 to believe in Jesus by following him;
 to believe that Jesus is God becoming human for our salvation;
 to see in Jesus, the proof or revelation of God’s love for the world;
 to accept/believe that Jesus is truly God, not simply human;
 to accept the incomprehensible mystery of Incarnation as manifestation or revelation
of God’s unconditional love (kagandahang-loob) for us;
 to worship Jesus as a God;
 to become a faithful disciple of Jesus in leading others to Him for salvation;
 TO SEE IN JESUS THE PERFECT/EXACT IMAGE/LIKENESS OF GOD IN HUMAN FORM.

JESUS’ LAST DAYS

The opposition to Jesus, the growing antipathy, the denunciation of him grows in the Gospel
stories as his death approaches; plotting, betrayal, the darkness of night, and evil seem to be
taking over the stage. Yet it is not a suicide mission, not a blind fate, but a ‘logical outcome
and deliberate fidelity to his Abba (Father) and the Kingdom’s cause he was enacting.

THE ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM; JESUS AS BAYANI?

 How important is Jerusalem for a Jew? It is a place for offering sacrifice and praise for
God. During the important religious feast, a pilgrim to the temple from all over Palestine
usually takes place.
 What did Jesus ride on to Jerusalem and what could it possibly mean? Jesus rode a
Donkey which symbolized a working animal like Jesus’ Messiahship (Peace and
Service). Riding a donkey is an Old Testament prophecy by the prophet Zechariah (9:9)
fulfilled by Jesus.
 What were the crowd's reactions upon seeing Jesus? Laying their cloaks, waving palms,
and shouting: “Hosanna” which means “Save us now.”
 What does this kind of treatment to Jesus indicate? This shows us the magnitude of
Christ’s popularity and his influence on people. The Jews look upon him more as a
political and economic redeemer.
 How do you think the religious authorities reacted to this? “Some of the Pharisees in
the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” “I tell you,” he replied, “if they
keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” (Luke 19:39-40)

TEMPLE INCIDENT: JESUS AS A SIGN OF CONTRADICTION

On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who
were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the
benches of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through
the temple courts. And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called
a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers. ’The chief priests
and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared
him because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. When evening came, Jesus and
his disciples went out of the city. (Mk 11:15-19).

 Where was Jesus and what was his purpose of going there? Jesus was at the Jerusalem
Temple to teach.
 What did Jesus see that made him angry? He saw a lot of merchants and money
changers. What was the reason for his anger? The Father’s house was turned into a

 house of trade and den of thieves more than a house of prayer. It became a Temple
commercialism.
 What was the reaction of the religious authorities? Jesus was becoming a threat to
them; hence, they need to look for a way to destroy him.

TEACHING AUTHORITY QUESTIONED: JESUS AS A SIGN OF CONTROVERSY

They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief
priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders came to him. “By what authority are you doing
these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?” Jesus replied, “I will ask
you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!” They discussed it among
themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’
But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John was
a prophet). So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know. Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what
authority I am doing these things.” (Mark11: 27-33)

ANOINTING OF JESUS BY A WOMAN & CONSPIRACY

Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the
chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.
“But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.” While he was in Bethany,
reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of
very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on
his head. Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of
perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the
poor.” And they rebuked her harshly. “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering
her? She has done a beautiful thing for me. The poor you will always have with you, and you
can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could.
She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever
the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory
of her.” Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to
them. They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for
an opportunity to hand him over. (Mark 14: 1-11)

LAST TABLE FELLOWSHIP (with the Twelve): WAITING FOR THE KINGDOM
When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. While they were reclining at the table
eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.” They
were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?” “It is one of
the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. The Son of Man will go
just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be
better for him if he had not been born. While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when
he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank
from it. “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them.
“Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new
in the kingdom of God.” (Mark 14: 17-25)

DAY OF SUFFERING: TRIALS AND TORTURES
In the late Thursday evening of the Trial, Caiaphas, the son in law of the High Priest Annas
was at the Sanhedrin. Jesus was accused of the following crimes: publicly declared the
destruction of the Temple and blasphemed as Jesus claims of being the son of God. This trial
was illegal because it violated four rules of the court during their time: first, there should be
no trial at night and during the Festival, there must have a quorum, there must have a witness
for the defense, and lastly, there should be no sentence and execution on the same day.

The result of the initial trial was to recommend Jesus to Roman authorities for the death
sentence. At that time, Pontius Pilate is the governor of Judea. Before the second trial, a
disciple (Peter) denied Jesus three times and Jesus was tortured by the temple guards. During
the trial before Pilate, the crime was changed to Treason or Rebellion, as Messiah means
“King of the Jews”. Pilate was reluctant to punish Jesus that he turned him to Herod Antipas.
During the trial before Herod Antipas, Jesus refused to speak. Antipas led Jesus back to Pilate
without any sentence. When Jesus was returned to Pilate, Jesus finally received a death
sentence and here also, was mocked by the soldiers and crowned with thorns.

THE CROSS (JESUS’ CRUCIFIXION) TERMS

“Ransom” means to pay the price’ and to buy back a slave especially. “Savior”/ “Redeemer”
is a legal term for a Jewish family member who repaid a debt. “Redemption” means to bring
back the lost/captured (used of God’s mighty action to deliver Israelites from Egypt and
Babylon). Crucifixion was a regular death for slaves, foreigners, and criminals; repulsive to
Jews & Greeks as barbaric. In terms of unbelievers, it was a sign of defeat, a sign that Jesus’
Kingdom and crushed for our sins.

He was beaten that we might have peace. He was whipped, and we were healed! All of us
have strayed away like sheep. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on
Him the guilt and sins of us all. From prison and trial, they led Him away to His death. But who
among the people realized that He was dying for their sins – that He was suffering their
punishment? I will give Him the honors of One who is mighty and great because He exposed
Himself to death. He was counted among those who were sinners. He bore the sins of many
and interceded for sinners (Isaiah 53:5-6,8,12).

But God demonstrates his love for us in this: while we were still sinners, was lost, a dream
unfulfilled which is a similar realization for Jesus’ disciples. “He carried away our sins in His
own body on the cross so we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. You have been
healed by His wounds.” (1Peter 2:24).

 What is Jesus doing on the Cross? To fulfill a prophecy that in his body he brought our
sin to the Cross.
 What have Jesus wounds brought to us? Healing.
 How did God prove his love for us? Christ died for us! (Rom. 5:8)
 What was our situation before God when Christ died for us? We are still sinners.

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this
way death came to all people because all sinned (Romans 5:12).

 What had entered into the world through one man (Adam)? Sin, and then death.
 What will happen to all because of sin? We will die. For even the Son of Man did not
come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).
 Why Jesus had come to us? To serve.
 What greatest service Jesus had rendered to humankind? That is, by giving himself as
Ransom (popular to the Filipino experience) for many.

Jesus’ death was both “death on behalf of humanity” and “for humanity’s freedom from the
power of sin”. Jesus’ crucifixion revealed 3 important realities of God’s offer of salvation: first
depth and unconditional love God has for us sinners because Jesus death reveals God’s
reconciling and unconditional communication of his Kagandahang-loob and malasakit when
we are still sinners; second destructive effect of sin because sin brings death and separation
from God who is the source of life, it is humanity’s sin that brought Jesus to the Cross, thus,
Jesus is the victim for our sin/disobedience; and third, Jesus as the ransom for our freedom
because Jesus’ self-sacrificing love transforms oppression/suffering into a path to
liberation/redemption Jesus’ death challenges/transforms us to experience the sense of
utang na loob to God’s kagandahang-loob and malasakit; to be truly sorry/repentant for one’s
sins and avoid committing them again; to check oneself not to cause/influence others to sin,
and to accept/confront one’s suffering and transform it into a path to liberation/redemption.

JESUS’ RESURRECTION: TRIUMPH OVER DEATH

And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also
who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead,
the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the
resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ, all
will be made alive (1Corinthians 15:17- 18, 20-22).

 Think what will happen to our faith in Christ if he did not resurrect from the dead? Our
Faith will be empty and useless.
 What will happen to us if Christ had not resurrected? We will still be lost under the
destructive power of sin.

  What share do we have in Adam? Death.
 What share do we have in Christ? His Resurrection.

We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know
him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if
anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we
are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. (1John 2:3-6).

 What is the visible sign that someone knows Jesus? It's obeying his commands.
 What kind of a man is he who claims he knew Jesus but does not follow him? He is a
liar.
 What happens to those who follow Jesus’ commands? God’s love will be made complete
in him (become a true image of God).
 If we know Jesus, what is our basic responsibility? To live the way Jesus lived, that is,
imitate Jesus – the perfect image of God.

JESUS’ RESURRECTION IS THE CENTRAL FOUNDATION OF CHRISTIANITY. JESUS’

RESURRECTION REVEALED THREE IMPORTANT REALITIES: first, the ultimate meaning of the
Cross that does not defeat but the victory of God over evil; second, what we can hope for in
Christ is New Life! And third, our mission and calling, that conforms to Jesus’ way of life, a
life of loving, forgiving, and serving.

PASCHAL MYSTERY
The Paschal Mystery is not “complete” if only referred to three significant events: Passion,
Death, and Resurrection. There is still a fourth event, the Ascension. The liturgy of the Church,
the celebration of the sacraments, and the seasons of Lent and Easter are particular times
when we pay attention to what Jesus Christ has done for us through his passion, death,
Resurrection, and Ascension.

The Paschal Mystery is Christ’s work of Redemption, which is accomplished through His
Passion, Death, and Resurrection. The Paschal Mystery is the process of dying and rising,
death, and new life. The word Paschal came from the Hebrew word PASCH which means to
PASS OVER. This refers, of course, to the first Passover when the Lord passed over the homes
of the Israelites while striking down the firstborn of Egypt. In the same way, God sent His Son
to be our paschal lamb. The essence of our faith is this: THAT JESUS CAME TO DIE FOR US,
TO FREE US FROM SIN, AND SO THAT WE MIGHT HAVE A NEW AND ETERNAL LIFE.
