Engineer
4. 1 MATERIALS
• Cement: OPC 43Grade Cement to be used for civil works shall confirm
to all relevant IS code 8112 as mentioned in the reference and as
specified in the contract. The cement shall be stored above ground in a
suitable weather tight godown and in such a manner to permit easy access
for proper inspection and to prevent deformation due to moisture. Cement
held in storage for a period of 90 days or longer shall be tested.
REINFORCEMENT
• Prepare Bar bending schedule based on the reinforcement drawings.
• All bars shall be accurately bent gradually and according to the
shapes and sizes as shown in drawings or as per BBS.
• Re bending or straightening incorrectly shall not be done without
approval of authority’s Engineer.
• Reinforcement shall be accurately fixed and maintained firmly in the
correct position using cover blocks, spacers, chairs, binding wire
etc. to prevent displacement during placing and compaction of
concrete.
• Binding wire shall be 16-gauge soft annealed wire.
• Place the rods as per the drawing, take care that the lapping is
always staggered & no adjacent bars have laps at same location 8s
the lapping length shall be as per the drawlng. Laps within 2D (depth
of beam) and '/• spans from the face of the column are not aNowed
• Verify the spacing & number of shear rings used. The rods shall be
tied with binding wire and all ends of wire shall be kept within the
cage & no wire ends should protrude in the cover zone.
• Ensure enough numbers of cover blocks are placed (Raft 50 mm,
Columns 40mm, Slabs and side walls 2 hmm) at l m intervals.
• Ensure if any insert plates are to be fixed for Top slab, for
supporting hand rails at walk way or slab top portion.
• Weld the required no of legs in the insert plate. Ensure proper
arresting of the plates while welding the plate with the legs so that
the face is not distorted.
• Tie / Weld the legs of the insert plate along with the main and shear rods.
Check the face of the insert plates after tying / welding the legs, any
rectification shall be done by adjusting the legs in the required
locations.
• If the concreting is a continuation of the existing structure, ensure
that the structure is chipped and cleaned before placing the
reinforcement & also the reinforcement of the existing structure
shall be over lapped and tied properly with the Reinforcement for
which concrete is to be done.
• All protruding bars from columns, beams and slabs to which other
bars are to be spliced later must be protected from rusting by a coat
of thin neat cement grout.
dust etc.
• Forms intended for reuse shall be treated with care. Forms that
have deteriorated shall not be used. Before reuse, all forms shall be
thoroughly scraped, cleaned holes suitably plugged and joints
repaired.
• Wire ties passing through beams and walls shall not be allowed. In
their place bolts passing through sleeves shall be used. Formwork
spacers left in situ shall not impair the desired appearance or
durability of the structure. Filling all the tie form holes with
grouting.
• Ensure that the shattering plates are properly supported, to avoid
bulging while concreting.
• Check for the verticality and rectify the same by adjusting the
supports provided.
• The tolerances on the shapes, lines and dimensions are as per
technical specification as follows
Variation from plumb of all structures:
1. In 2.5m: 1Ornm
2. In Src: 15mm
3. In l 0m or more: 25mm
Variation from level or grade of slab, beams, soffits and visible
arches:
1. In2.5s:5m+n
2. 1n7.5m: 10mm
Variation in cross sectional dimensions of columns, beams and
similar members:
I. -Srnm
2. + l0mm
2. * 10mm
Footings for columns, piers, walls and similar structures:
l . Variation in Dlmension in plan:
• - l Omm
• + 50mm
2. Displacement or Eccentricity:
• 2% footing width in the direction of misplacement but
not more than 5Omm.
3. Reduction in thickness:
• 5% of specified thickness subject to a maximum of
50rnm
Tolerances in fixing anchor bolts:
1. Anchor bolts without sleeve 1. hmm in plan.
2. Anchor bolts with sleeves hmm for bolts up to 28mm dia and
3mm for bolts 32mm dia and above.
3. Embedded parts: hmm in all directions.
• The shiittering shall be sufficiently tight to prevent loss of slurry
from concrete, using sealed.
• The stripping time for formwork shall be as per IS 456.
Type of formwork Minimum period before
striking formwork
Vertical formwork to columns, 16-24 hrs
walls, beams
Soffit formwork to slabs(props to 3 days
be refixed immediately after
removal of formwork)
Soffit formwork to beams 7 days
(props to be refined immediately
after removal of formwork)
Props to slab:
[Link] up to 4.5m 7 days
Construction Joint:
• Concrete shall be placed without interruption until completion of
work between construction joints.
• Concrete shall be placed without interruption until completion of
work between construction joints.
• When resuming work on the hardened concrete surface of the joint. It
shall be thoroughly cleaned, roughened and all lattices removed. The
surface shall be swept clean with wire brushes thoroughly wetted
and treated with a this layer of cement mortar consisting of equal
volume of sand and cement and fresh concreting will start.
• On this, a layer of concrete not exceeding l50mm thickness shall be
placed and well rammed against the old work.
Repairing of concrete:
• Immediately after the shattering is removed, repairing work must be
done.
• The surface shall be saturated with water for 24 hours before
patching is done with l: 5 cement sand mortar and also mix with
bonding agent.
• The mortar shall be well worked into the surface with a wooden
float.
Bricks shall be so laid that all joints are well filled with mortar. The
thickness of joints shall not less than 6mm and not more than
l Omm.
• Care shall be taken to ensure that the brickwork is kept wet for
seven days commencing from 24 hours after the course is laid
