Mastering Conditional Sentences
Conditional sentences (if-clauses) are used to express that the action in the main clause can only
take place if a certain condition is fulfilled.
Note on Structure: You can start a sentence with the "If" clause or the "Main" clause. If you
start with "If," use a comma. If the "If" is in the middle, no comma is needed.
If it rains, we will stay home.
We will stay home if it rains.

1. Zero Conditional: General Truths
Used for things that are always true, like scientific facts or habits.
Formula: If + Simple Present, ... Simple Present.
Example: If you heat ice, it melts.
2. First Conditional: Real Possibilities
Used for a future situation that is likely to happen.
Formula: If + Simple Present, ... Will + Verb.
Example: If I study hard, I will pass the exam.
3. Second Conditional: Unreal/Hypothetical
Used for imaginary situations in the present or future, or things that are very unlikely.
Formula: If + Simple Past, ... Would + Verb.
Note: We often use "were" instead of "was" for all subjects (e.g., If I were you...).
Example: If I won the lottery, I would buy a boat.
4. Third Conditional: Past Regrets
Used for situations that did not happen in the past and their imaginary results.
Formula: If + Past Perfect, ... Would have + Past Participle.
Example: If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train.
5. Mixed Conditionals (Type 4)
Used when a past condition has a present result.
Formula: If + Past Perfect, ... Would + Verb.
Example: If I had moved to Paris last year, I would speak French now.

Detailed Breakdown
1. Zero Conditional: The "Always" Rule
Used for things that are always true.
Structure: If + Present Simple, ... Present Simple.

2. First Conditional: The "Real World" Rule
Used for a future situation that is likely to happen.
