1ST PROBLEM SET (QUARTER 3)
INSTRUCTIONS: Show the complete solution of the following problem. Write the problem and
the solution in long bond paper/s

1. Astronomers discover an exoplanet, Xerion, orbiting its star. The star has a mass of
3.0 ×10 kg . At a certain point in its orbit, the exoplanet is 4.0 × 10 m away from the
30 11

star. If the gravitational force between them is measured to be 1.5 ×1022 N, find the
mass of the exoplanet.

2. A small spacecraft of mass 1.5 ×103 kgpasses near an asteroid with mass 4.0 × 1012 kg.
If the distance between their centers is 9.0 ×10 3 m, compute the gravitational
attraction between the spacecraft and the asteroid.

3. Two large water containers have masses of 15 kg and 9 kg. They are positioned 0.68
meters apart. Determine the gravitational force between them.

4. An astronaut on a small moon with a gravitational acceleration of

g=1.6 m/s lifts a scientific instrument of mass 12 kg to the top of a research rover,
2

which is 1.8 meters high. Calculate the gravitational potential energy change of the
instrument

5. A student carries a 7.5-kg backpack up a staircase to the second floor, which is 4.5
meters higher than the ground floor. Calculate the gravitational potential energy
gained by the backpack

6. A child lifts a 12-kg toy box onto a shelf, giving it 117.6 J of gravitational potential
energy. Find the height of the shelf.

7. A planet orbits its star in an elliptical orbit with a closest distance (perihelion) of 1.2 ×
10^11 m and a farthest distance (aphelion) of 2.0 × 10^11 m. Calculate the semi-major
axis of the planet’s orbit.

8. The exoplanet Kepler-11 b orbits its star at a semi-major axis of 0.091 AU and has an
orbital period of approximately 10.30 days. Another exoplanet in the same system,
Kepler-11 g, orbits at 0.466 AU. Estimate the orbital period of Kepler-11 g.
