Chapter One: Background Information
The industrial attachment is a core component of Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media
Technology at Maseno University, designed to equip students with practical skills in their chosen
field. In the context of the media industry, radio broadcasting plays a vital role in informing and
engaging communities, particularly in regions where access to other media forms may be
limited. Community radio stations like Dala FM serve as essential platforms for delivering local
news, promoting cultural values, and addressing societal issues. This attachment at Dala FM
provided an opportunity to immerse myself in the dynamic environment of radio journalism and
production, gaining hands-on experience in a real-world setting. The attachment was undertaken
to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and the practical
demands of the media industry, fostering professional growth and career readiness

1.0 Introduction with Objective of Industrial Attachment

Industrial attachment is a mandatory experiential learning program that bridges the gap between
classroom instruction and the professional workplace environment. It provides students with an
opportunity to integrate the theoretical concepts learned during their academic studies with
practical, hands-on application in real-life scenarios. For students in the field of Communication
and Media Technology, industrial attachment is particularly critical because it exposes them to
the dynamic and fast-paced nature of media operations, enabling them to sharpen their technical
skills, creativity, and adaptability.
The industrial attachment at Dala FM was designed to immerse me in various aspects of radio
broadcasting, including news production, program hosting, content creation, and technical
operations. This experience allowed me to observe, participate, and contribute to the day-to-day
functions of a professional media house while working alongside experienced journalists,
presenters, and production staff.
Through this attachment, I was able to learn how news is sourced, processed, and delivered to
audiences in a timely and accurate manner. I also gained first-hand experience in the use of
professional audio editing software, operating studio equipment, producing adverts and promos,
and adhering to broadcasting ethics and regulatory requirements.

The objectives of this industrial attachment included:

 Practical Skill Development: To acquire hands-on experience in news gathering,
scriptwriting, audio production, and live presentation.
 Application of Academic Knowledge: To apply theoretical concepts learned in class to
real-life broadcasting and production environments.
 Professional Exposure: To understand the operational structure, workflows, and
challenges of a functional radio station.
 Creativity and Innovation: To explore creative approaches in content development,
promo production, and audience engagement.

7
 Teamwork and Communication – To enhance interpersonal skills by working
collaboratively with professionals from diverse backgrounds.
 Career Preparation: To gain insights and build networks that will guide my professional
growth and readiness for the media industry.
In essence, this attachment served as both a learning platform and a testing ground for my skills,
preparing me for a successful career in the media sector while giving me a deeper appreciation of
the role community radio plays in informing, educating, and entertaining its audience.

1.1 Organizational Background Profile

Dala FM 98.8, which broadcasts in Luo, is a well-known community-oriented radio station based
in Kisumu, Kenya. Operating 24/7, its coverage spans Luo Nyanza, the South Rift, and parts of
the Western regions. The station serves as a meaningful platform that informs, entertains, and
reflects the cultural identity of the Luo-speaking community. Its motto, "Kar Chuny Oganda
“A Place That Feels like Home”, captures its goal of being deeply rooted in and resonant with its
local audience.
Dala FM’s programming includes a dynamic mix approximately 60% music and 40% talk. It
features traditional Luo music genres like benga, ohangla, gospel, rhumba, and lingala, along
with local news, talk shows, children’s programs, sports, science, lifestyle segments, and weather
updates. This content diversification ensures that the station caters to both entertainment and
informational needs, maintaining its role as a trusted companion to listeners.
Dala FM operates as a community radio station, rooted in local engagement and social
development, rather than profit-oriented motives. This aligns it with principles shared by the
Association of Kenya Community Media Operators (AKCMO), which advocates for community
media as a tool for grassroots expression, social change, and inclusive communication principles
often underrepresented in mainstream media.
As a community radio station, Dala FM plays an important role in Kisumu and surrounding areas
by giving voice to local narratives, reinforcing linguistic and cultural identity, and providing
accessible information to its listeners. Its focus on Luo-language content establishes it as a
valuable medium for cultural preservation while fostering inclusivity and trust. These facets
make Dala FM an ideal site for practical learning in media production, journalism, and audience
engagement.

15
2.1 Innovations and creativity of intern
During my industrial attachment at Dala FM, I actively applied creativity and innovation to
improve content quality, enhance listener engagement, and streamline some of the station’s
operations. My role demanded not only the execution of assigned tasks but also the ability to
think critically and develop fresh approaches to broadcasting.

1. Creative Program Content Development

While hosting “The In-Between” show, I took initiative to design discussion topics that were
both relatable and thought-provoking, targeting listeners aged 20 to 50 years. I incorporated real-
life scenarios, relationship case studies, and interactive listener polls to make the program more
engaging. This creative approach resulted in increased call-ins and more active listener
participation.

2. Innovative Audio Production Techniques

In my production work, I experimented with audio effects such as modulation, chorus, filters,
equalizers, echo, and delay to improve the richness and clarity of sound in promos and
advertisements. I also suggested new ways of arranging station identity drops within playlists for
maximum brand recall without interrupting the listener’s flow.

3. Customized Promo and Advertisement Scripting

I wrote and voiced unique promos such as the Kisumu Summer Music Festival and Tropicana
Pulp Juice adverts, ensuring that the scripts matched both the station’s tone and the target
audience’s preferences. The blend of humor, persuasive language, and catchy phrases made these
promos stand out on air.

4. Playlist Structuring for Better Flow

I took part in creating balanced music playlists, strategically placing slower and faster tracks to
maintain audience attention. I also integrated relevant sound effects and short skits between
tracks, making the listening experience more dynamic.

5. On-the-Spot Problem Solving in the Field

While covering events and conducting interviews, I had to adapt quickly to unpredictable
situations such as background noise, unprepared interviewees, or sudden schedule changes. I
developed quick solutions like repositioning microphones, rephrasing questions on the spot, and
recording in quieter nearby locations to ensure quality audio.

16
6. Enhancing News Brief Delivery
To make my 11:00 AM, 12:00 Noon, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM news briefs more appealing, I
adopted a conversational yet professional tone that kept listeners informed without sounding
monotonous. I also introduced short teaser lines at the start to capture audience attention before
delivering the main news content.

2.4 Challenges Faced During My Attachment Period

During my industrial attachment at Dala FM, I encountered several challenges that tested my
adaptability, problem-solving skills, and professional resilience. While these challenges were at
times frustrating they contributed significantly to my growth as a potential practitioner.
 Technical Equipment Limitations
The station occasionally experienced shortages of functional field recorders, studio microphones,
or editing workstations, especially during peak hours.
This often meant sharing equipment with other interns or waiting for availability, which
sometimes delayed task completion.

 Tight Deadlines
The fast-paced nature of the newsroom required quick script writing, editing, and voicing
sometimes within a matter of minutes before airtime.
This pressure was particularly intense during breaking news coverage, where every second
mattered.

 Limited Field Access

In some field assignments, gaining access to certain venues or securing interviews was
challenging due to security restrictions or uncooperative respondents.
Some locals were suspicious of media presence and hesitant to provide information, fearing
misrepresentation.

 Balancing Multiple Tasks

I was often assigned multiple tasks simultaneously, such as editing audio while preparing scripts
for a bulletin.
This required advanced multitasking skills that I had to develop progressively during the
attachment.

20
 Software Familiarity
Although I had prior knowledge of editing software, mastering advanced Adobe Audition
features for professional radio production required extra practice.
Initial editing tasks took longer to complete until I became more efficient with the tools
 Adaptation to Organizational Workflow
Every radio station has its unique structure and procedures. Adjusting to Dala FM’s specific
editorial style, language preferences, and show format took a few weeks of observation and
guidance.

 Resource Constraints in the Field

There were times when transport arrangements for field coverage were limited, meaning I had to
improvise with available means to meet deadlines.

 Language Barrier with Some Interviewees

While Kiswahili and English are the main broadcast languages, some interviewees were more
comfortable speaking in Dholuo or other local dialects, requiring translation for news scripts.

2.5 Below is how I overcame the challenges faced during my attachment:

Throughout my industrial attachment at Dala FM, I encountered various challenges, but I
approached each with adaptability and a willingness to learn.
 To address the issue of limited technical equipment, I scheduled my editing and recording
sessions during off-peak hours and occasionally used my personal laptop for pre-editing
to ease the workload on shared resources. Working under tight deadlines pushed me to
prepare scripts in advance, utilize quick editing shortcuts in Adobe Audition, and
maintain a flexible workflow.
 In situations where field access was restricted, I carried official press identification at all
times, introduced myself politely, and assured respondents of the purpose and
confidentiality of interviews. Balancing multiple assignments required effective time
management, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and collaborating with colleagues during
busy news hours.
 I also invested extra time after work to improve my technical skills through tutorials and
hands-on practice, mastering effects, equalization, and compression techniques to meet
station standards. To adapt to the station’s workflow, I closely observed senior staff,
aligned my output with their expectations, and sought regular feedback from supervisors.
In the field, I learned to work efficiently with minimal resources by using portable
recorders or mobile devices and planning travel routes strategically.

21
 Finally, to overcome language barriers, I improved my conversational Dholuo and sought
assistance from fluent colleagues for accurate translations. These strategies not only
helped me overcome challenges but also strengthened my professional competence and
resilience in a real media environment.

22
Chapter Three: Recommendations
3.0 Recommendation
Based on my experience during the industrial attachment at Dala FM, I recommend that the
station provides more adequate equipment such as microphones, recording devices, and editing
suites to allow interns to practice independently and gain hands-on skills without excessive
delays. There should also be a more structured orientation program at the beginning of the
attachment to help interns quickly understand the station’s workflow, policies, and expectations.
In addition, offering more opportunities for fieldwork, such as outside broadcasts and live event
coverage, would enhance exposure to real-time media operations. Assigning each intern a
dedicated mentor and holding regular feedback sessions would help track progress, address
challenges early, and ensure effective learning. The station could also organize internal
workshops on advanced audio editing, scriptwriting, voice projection, and news writing to
strengthen interns’ competencies. Furthermore, collaboration between Maseno University and
Dala FM should be strengthened to ensure that the attachment tasks align closely with the
academic curriculum. Lastly, the station should create an environment that encourages interns to
pitch new ideas for shows, promos, or content packaging, as this would foster innovation,
creativity, and confidence among interns.

23
Chapter Four: Conclusion
4.0 Conclusion
The industrial attachment at Dala FM was a valuable and transformative experience that allowed
me to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in class to real-world media production and
broadcasting. Throughout the attachment period, I was able to develop practical skills in audio
editing, scriptwriting, news reading, and show hosting, as well as learn the importance of
teamwork, time management, and adaptability in a fast-paced media environment. Interacting
with experienced media professionals exposed me to industry standards, ethical considerations,
and the need for accuracy and creativity in content production. The attachment also helped me
build confidence in my abilities, improve my communication skills, and understand the
operational structure of a modern radio station. Despite facing challenges such as equipment
limitations and time constraints, I was able to adapt, learn from the experience, and contribute
meaningfully to the station’s activities. Overall, this attachment has reinforced my passion for
electronic media and strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in broadcasting, with a clear
focus on continuous improvement and innovation in the field.
