Engineering Drawing Assignment 2

This document outlines the instructions for an engineering drawing assignment consisting of five questions, each requiring specific geometric constructions. Students are instructed to maintain accuracy and clarity while using geometrical construction methods, with all construction lines remaining visible. The assignment covers the construction of an ellipse, parabola, hyperbola, helix on a cone, and an epicycloid, with detailed marking rubrics for each question.

MPEN 126: ENGINEERING DRAWING ASSIGNMENT 2

Instructions:
- Attempt ALL questions.
- Use geometrical construction methods only.
- All construction lines must remain visible.
- Final curves must be neatly darkened.
- Maintain accuracy, proportion, and clarity throughout.

- All drawing must fit into two drawing sheets Q1-2 go to sheet one while Q3-5 go to
sheet 2.

QUESTION 1 – ELLIPSE CONSTRUCTION

Construct an ellipse having:
- Major axis = 100 mm
- Minor axis = 70 mm

1. Draw and label the major and minor axes.

2. Construct using the Concentric Circle Method.
3. Construct using the Rectangle (Oblong) Method.
4. Show all projection lines.
5. Darken only the final curve.

Marking Rubric:

• Credit will be awarded for:

• Accurate drawing and labeling of the axes
• Correct execution of concentric circle construction
• Proper projection and rectangle method construction
• Smooth and symmetrical ellipse
• Clear and visible construction lines

QUESTION 2 – PARABOLA (PROJECTILE MOTION)

A ball attains a maximum height of 120 m and covers a horizontal range of 150 m.

1. Draw the complete parabolic path using a suitable scale.

2. Indicate vertex, axis of symmetry, focus, and directrix.
3. Select point Q and construct tangent and normal.
4. Show all auxiliary constructions.

Marking Rubric:

• Credit will be awarded for:

• Appropriate scale selection and accurate layout
• Correct geometric construction of the parabola
• Accurate identification of vertex, focus, and directrix
• Proper construction of tangent and normal
• Smooth symmetrical curve with visible auxiliary constructions

QUESTION 3 – HYPERBOLA CONSTRUCTION

Point P is 40 mm from the Horizontal Axis and 30 mm from the Vertical Axis.

1. Draw reference axes.

2. Locate and label point P.
3. Construct a hyperbola through point P.
4. Draw and label asymptotes.
5. Show sufficient plotted points.

Marking Rubric:

• Credit will be awarded for:

• Accurate drawing of axes and location of point P
• Correct application of a suitable construction method
• Proper construction of asymptotes
• Accurate hyperbolic curve approaching asymptotes
• Clear and visible construction steps

QUESTION 4 – HELIX ON A CONE

Draw a helix of one complete convolution on a cone:
- Base diameter = 70 mm
- Axis height = 90 mm
- Pitch = 90 mm

1. Draw top and front views.

2. Divide base circle into 12 equal parts.
3. Project divisions to elevation.
4. Develop helix for one revolution.
5. Indicate pitch and visible/hidden portions.

Marking Rubric:

• Credit will be awarded for:

• Accurate construction of cone in both views
• Correct and equal division of the base circle
• Proper projection between views
• Accurate helix development with correct pitch
• Clear indication of visible and hidden portions
QUESTION 5 – EPICYCLOID (LOCUS OF A POINT)
Draw the locus of a point on a circle of diameter 50 mm rolling externally without slipping
on a directing circle of radius 75 mm.

1. Draw directing and rolling circles.

2. Divide both circles appropriately.
3. Determine successive rolling positions.
4. Plot tracing point positions.
5. Join points smoothly to form the epicycloid.

Marking Rubric:

• Credit will be awarded for:

• Accurate construction of directing and rolling circles
• Correct and equal division of circles
• Proper determination of rolling positions (no slipping condition)
• Accurate plotting of tracing point positions
• Smooth and correctly shaped epicycloid with visible construction
