Course Description
CD 100 is a three-unit course on the macro analysis of Philippine historical, socio- economic and
political situations and issues in relation in development work.
Course Objectives
At the end of the semester, the students should be able to:
1. Gain theoretical and practical knowledge of various tools and methodologies for social analysis;
2. Develop wider comprehension of the historical and structural roots of current Philippine social
realities and the context of community development work in Philippine society;
3. Apply the tools in social analysis in gaining a deeper understanding of the current situation of
various social sectors in urban and rural communities; and
4. Appreciate the on-going efforts of people’s organizations, government, NGOs and other sectors
of civil society in addressing current social issues.
Course Methodology
Students of this course will be treated as both community and classroom. As a community, there
will be a premium for participatory processes that will enable all members to express their ideas and
creativity to develop a sense of collectiveness. On the other hand, as a classroom, academic tools will
be utilized to measure the students’ levels of achievement vis-a-vis the set course objectives. Specific
learning methods include the following: Lecture-discussions, reports, workshops, symposium, small
group discussions, field exposures, and other written outputs.

section on Context of Development Work in the Philippines

Class Guidelines
1. University policy on attendance
Class attendance will be checked at the start of every session. Students must not miss more than
20% of their classes which is equal to three (3) sessions in our schedule. Failure to maintain at
least 80% of class attendance will result to a failing grade (5.00).
2. Proper class decorum
Put your gadgets in silent mode. Respect everyone’s opinions and backgrounds. Observe gender
and cultural sensitivity. Cooperate in creating an enabling environment for healthy discourse
and learning.
3. Less paper please
This class will minimize the use of paper by prioritizing readings with electronic formats and
requiring everyone to submit their class requirements via email in PDF format. The instructor
will create a centralized Google Drive that will act as the repository of the readings, reports and
other class materials. The remaining printed readings can be found in libraries within UP
Diliman.
4. Go beyond the readings
A basic reading list will be provided. However, everyone is highly encouraged to find more
updated materials that will enrich the reports and discussions. Materials from the news can also
be utilized with careful distinction on the bias of the producing media outlet.
5. On exposures
The itinerary of activities (and expected expenses) for the exposures will be discussed prior to
the conduct of the visits. As per university policy, every student must accomplish and submit a
Student Participation Agreement that will be provided by the class instructor for a specific
exposure. Failure to submit this form will result to the prohibition of the non-compliant
student’s participation in the said activity.
6. Other relevant university policies
Everyone must be guided accordingly by the provisions set forth in the 2012 Code of Student
Conduct of UP Diliman and the UP Anti-Sexual Harassment Code.
