1 - Rational Number Notes

The document outlines different types of numbers including Natural Numbers, Whole Numbers, Integers, and Rational Numbers, with definitions and examples for each. It also describes properties of Rational Numbers such as Closure, Commutative, Associative, and Distributive Properties, explaining how operations on these numbers behave. Each property is introduced with a brief explanation but lacks specific examples.

Rational Numbers
Types of Numbers
1) Natural Numbers
Natural Numbers is a collection of all counting numbers. It is denoted by the letter ‘N’
For Ex. 1,2,3,4,5,6……
2) Whole Numbers
All Natural Numbers together with the number 0 are called Whole Numbers. It is denoted by the letter ‘W'
For Ex. 0,1,2,3,4,5,6……
3) Integers
All the whole numbers and the negative of whole numbers together are called Integers. It is denoted by
the letter ‘Z’
For Ex. – 21, – 5, – 9 etc
4) Rational Numbers
𝑝
All the numbers which can be written in the form of 𝑞 where 𝑝 and 𝑞 are integers and 𝑞 ≠ 0 are called
Rational Numbers. It is denoted by the letter ‘Q’
16 −2
For Ex.: 0.16, 5.35, ,
5 5

Properties of Rational Numbers

1) Closure Property
When we perform any operation on a specific set of numbers (natural, whole, integer etc…) such
that the result also belongs to the same set then we say it follows closure property over that
operation.
For Ex.:
2) Commutative Property
An operation is said to be commutative under an operation when change in order of the operands
does not change the result.
For Ex.:
3) Associative Property
An operation is said to be associative under an operation when change in grouping of the operands
does not change the result.
For Ex.:
4) Distributive Property
If a number is multiplied to the sum/subtraction of two other numbers the result would be the
same as when the number is individually multiplied and then added/subtracted.
For Ex.:
