SS7 Protocol Layers and MAP Overview

SS7 is a protocol that defines procedures for transporting and processing database queries to support advanced intelligent network features and services. It bridges traditional telephone networks with IP and 3G wireless networks. The SS7 standard includes protocols like MAP, SCCP, and TCAP that allow different network elements to communicate and provide services to mobile users. MAP specifically is used to query HLRs and VLRs to determine subscriber services and handle location updates and calls as users roam between networks.

SS7 is the protocol that defines the procedures to transport and process database queriesnecessary for providing today's

advanced intelligent network (AIN) features and services. SS7 isincreasingly being used to bridge the PSTN with next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) and 3GWireless networks, which enables seamless convergence and inter-working of PSTN and IPprotocols within a unified architecture. The SS7 packets combine to bring tremendous value for service providers and enterprise solution providers alike. A complete array of packets, including MTP1~3, ISUP, TCAP, SCCP, MAP and more, empower mobile solution providers to efficiently and rapidly deliver most valueadded service and applications. The SS7 standard has been extended for multiple countryspecific variations, such as ANSI in America and ETSI standard in Europe. SS7 product line includes the following protocol layers: 1. Mobile Application Part (MAP) Used by the Mobile Switching Center (MSC), Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), and Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) in wireless networks to query the Home Location Register (HLR) or Visitor Location Register (VLR) to determine and/or verify subscriber Services. 2. Mobile Application Part is an SS7 protocol ,Mobile Application Part Protocol is used to transfer the information between GSM Network .Mobile Application Part Protocol is not doing the function directly ,but if performed indirectly . MAP is used in Operation and Handling the information in Core network . MAP receiver the data from the Subscriber in ASN.1 format from HLR and [Link] transfer to other network element . MAP Procedure is used in GSM signalling for Location updating .and the MAP signalling between VLR an a HLR. [Link] interferace work in GSM Network part,in The place of HLR MSC VLR EIR SGSN gsm SCF GMLC 2. Signaling Connection Control Part (SCCP) Connection-oriented and/or connection-less services (Class 0, 1, 2, and 3) for transferring data across an SS7 network. ITU-T, ANSI, and China variants Transaction Capabilities Application Part (TCAP) End-to-end, connectionless network service protocol between transaction capability users across an SS7 network. An ASN.1 encoding/decoding engine to encode/decode all operation codes and dialog parameters ITU-T, ANSI, ETSI, and TTC (Japan) variants

Mobile Application Part:

The Mobile Application Part (MAP) is an SS7 protocol which provides an application layer for the various nodes in GSM and UMTS mobile core networks and GPRS core networks to communicate with each other in order to provide services to mobile phone users. The Global System or 3G for Mobile Communications (GSM) is a globally accepted standard for digital cellular communications. Mobile Application Part (MAP) GSM/3G supports interactive mobile applications (e.g., cellular, paging, voice messaging) between the network entities in a GSM/3G system. These functional entities include Home Location Registers (HLRs), Visitor Location Registers (VLRs), Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs), SGSN Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) and so on. The Mobile Application Part is the application-layer protocol used to access the Home Location Register, Visitor Location Register, Mobile Switching Center, Equipment Identity Register, Authentication Centre, Short message service center and Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN).

The primary facilities provided by MAP are: Mobility Services: location management (roaming), authentication, managing service subscription information, fault recovery, Operation and Maintenance: subscriber tracing, retrieving a subscriber's IMSI Call Handling: routing, managing calls whilst roaming, checking that a subscriber is available to receive calls Supplementary Services Short Message Service Packet Data Protocol (PDP) services for GPRS: providing routing information for GPRS connections Location Service Management Services: obtaining the location of subscribers APPLICATIONS & SERVICES SUPPORTED: 1. Location management services 2. Handover management services 3. Authentication management services 4. IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identities) management services 5. Subscriber management services 6. Short Message Service (SMS) management services 7. Network-requested PDP context activation services 8. Location service management services
