ANSWER KEY
DEFINE

Explain how the following factors affect the

climate of a region.

Topography: Mountains can block air and cause more rainfall on

one side, while the other side becomes drier. Bodies of water can
make nearby areas cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Elevation: Higher elevations are colder, while lower elevations are

warmer.

Latitude: Areas near the equator are warmer, while regions closer
to the poles are colder. The amount of sunlight an area receives
determines its temperature and the type of climate it has.
Solar energy from the Sun hits the equator directly, making
it warmer there. The warm air near the equator moves
toward the colder poles, and the cold air near the poles
sinks and moves toward the equator. However, because the
Earth is spinning, the movement of air is affected. The
spinning causes the winds to change direction and flow at
an angle. In the northern hemisphere, the winds blow in the
opposite direction compared to the winds in the southern
hemisphere. We call this effect the Coriolis Effect. It creates
specific wind patterns on Earth that follow certain paths.

What does the word

precipitation mean?

Precipitation refers to any water

that falls from the sky to the
Earth's surface, including rain,
snow, sleet, and hail. It is
essential for replenishing our
water sources and affects
weather and climate patterns in
different regions.
